Art in the Eye of a Needle

This man can't read or write but he can carve out the Statue of Liberty inside the eye of a needle.
His sculptures are so small that he even thought he may have accidently inhaled his Alice in Wonderland piece.
His life's work was sold to a collector for $20 million.
Especially impressive was the Charlie Chaplin sculpture that was balanced on the tip of an eyelash.

He's actually British, which makes the story cooler!

He sold his collection to David Lloyd in 2007 (the bloke that owns the gyms!) for an undisclosed sum, and Lloyd then insured it for £11.2million

Willard Wigan is a Birmingham (UK) born artist whose 70 strong collection of art sculptures that each fit on the head of a pin and which can normally only be viewed via a microscope has been sold for £11 million which works out to be around £160,000 per piece. Elvis Presley, The Statue of Liberty, Rodin’s The Thinker,a model of the last supper and this depiction of Snow White and the seven dwarfs are all featured in the collection bought by entrepreneur David Lloyd.
Willard Wigan who was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year honours carves the sculptures out of rice and sugar and paints them using an eyelash as a paintbrush..

Willard has learning difficulties and cannot read or write but as a child learned to express himself through his artwork. He says:
“Being a child I used to start making houses for ants because I thought they needed somewhere to live. “I lived in a fantasy world and I thought they needed shoes and hats.”
