Artificial turf....

badgerrulesbadgerrules

So our garden needs a bit of a make over as it currently has badly looked after flower beds (we only moved in a few weeks ago). And we were wondering about artificial grass, how easy is it to fit? maintain? can i fit it myself? All help appreciated.

    How big is the area?
    badgerrules
8 metre squared square ( i dont know how to do a superscript 2 :) ) and then some beds at the side of the path which adds up to 8m by 1m so 16 metres squared total. So a ralatively small area so i know it would be a pain cutting real grass. So the only options are artificial grass or some decorative gravel.

there are loads of places do it...at a variety of prices and qualities. I have just had it done, and bought from 1-grass, which I thought was the best deal for the quality. You can buy samples on ebay, but if you google artificial grass, loads of companies come up, and they all send out samples free.
As for laying it, you need hardcore, then sand, which has to be compacted down, then an undersheet of stuff to prevent weeds coming through. It comes in 2 and 4 m widths. If you need to join it you also need their tape. The result is great...I'm soooo pleased with it, but it is expensive. Something to note when searching for it....some companies quote without vat, and some charge a fortune to deliver.

What is the cost comparison of say mowing a lawn over the expected life span of this stuff? Say you buy a new mower every 5 years, mow the lawn once a week for 9 weeks using a 1.4kw appliance for 30 minutes each time. How much weight in carbon is locked up in the grass compared to the carbon that is used to make the astro turf?

p.s. I wouldn't buy a house with astro turf for a lawn. Who knows where else the lazy owners have cut corners on the up keep of the house.

you just need to cut it to size so I am sure you can fit it yourself if you can cut in a straight line. X)
they look pretty good but i don't know how long they last.

the expected life span is 20 - 25 years

as for cutting corners.......I would say it is a reflection on the owner that they care for their property, and spend real money to have it look good!

both posts above r wrong my m8 just did this 5 weeks ago it looks fantastic, his garden is 30' by 20' cost about £660 with the underlay stuff and the sand to go on top, he fitted it himself, all one piece I think if I get time I will go and take a pic

most of the nighburs have asked where di he get it from - they thought it was real, even close up

Most of it looks very fake. But I did see somewhere some that varied in colour and texture and even had the thin brown strands like with a real lawn. Looked pretty convincing.

make sure you do your research some of those artificial turfs give off toxic nasties
