Someone is stuck in our townhouse in Spain due to the ash cloud. Does anyone know if they will get reinbursed for accomadation as the airline says it will reinburse for hotel accomadation

Think its all a bit up in the air (if you'll pardon the pun) about compensation. If you're on a package holiday then you're covered but if you did it yourself - flights then separate accommodation I think you're likely only to be covered with the flight. Not sure though but a friend of mine was stuck last month on a DIY holiday and they only arranged her flight back - accomodation was nothing to do with them basically since she had booked it separately herself.

my mum had people stuck in her villa in florida last time and tey had to pay for it themself!!! airline wouldnt pay out because they had booked everything sep!!x

Surely they have no legal right to stay there free of charge. They should be paying you for remaining to stay in the accomodation.

If its a European airline, the people need to contact them to find out where to go. If they just try to claim afterwards it will be much harder. The airline should provide 1 or 2 nights accomodation at a cheap hotel near the airport.
If its a non European airline (like I had!) they're ******ed...

We do know the people so we will probably come to some deal with them and hopefully they will only be there for about 3 extra nights, however if they could recieve compensation from airlines or insurance they would pay us this.l

Yup and you could inflate the daily rate and both make a nice bit of cash out of the airline. I hope they tell you to poke it.

I am not saying I am going to charge them. Would you not claim from insurance or airline if you could. So are all the hotels letting people stop there free of charge, using facilities etc.
if compensation was available I am sure the majority of people would be claiming it

Why? this person is running a business, not a refuge. They have stated that they will not charge above the normal rates. Seems reasonable to me

If you must know the 5 people have been staying in our townhouse free of charge for one week anyway so dont say we are greedy

how is it greed??
this person rents this out to make a profit and at the same time has bills to pay for cleaniung manegement company etc!! they could also lose out because other paying guests may want to book in for a week or two and would have to be turned down!!

I don't believe it's greed and they've done a great thing allowing the ppl to stay without demanding money or shoving them out of the door!.

Why not?, if it is an EU airline, they are entitled to accommodation cost refunds under EU Law.

Just put receipts in to the airline for reasonable costs involved.

Under Article 9 of EU Regulation 261 .
