Asked to join Mensa

Hi, I was asked to perform a variety of tests for university (a stipulation to apply for a bursary) and one of the tests was a test performed by a psychologist to measure my degree of dyslexia. They are still deciding on the bursary but my I.Q results returned with an I.Q of 147 (my orthography was my weakest area and mathematics was my most able area) and I have been told this is certified proof to join Mensa but I am not sure that they are any benefits to joining especially since there is an annual charge to be a member and university is expensive. Has anyone any idea of possible benefits?

Was that making a point at my dyslexia or just a generic video?

Wow how touchy are you? No that was a video posted by duckmagic I meant to link to his post rather than direct to the video, post here

FWIW my brother suffers from dyslexia as does my partner and suspect one of my kids may do to so I wouldnt point fun at it, as I side note I was amused by a dyslexia awareness campaigns t-shirt that carried the slogan "I suffer from dailysex".

No just a question, saw the original post a little later circulating around.

147 is very good, I got 138 and passed my Mensa preliminary test. I was going to join just for an ego boost if anything, and it might be good in later life or job applications etc. Its only about £40 for the membership isnt it?

I used to, but it's sometimes closer to weekly these days.

OP, no benefits I can think of, and no matter what you say, people will tend to judge you on traditional methods (exam results, interpersonal/communicational skills etc). Putting MENSA membership on a resume might even come across as somewhat laughable, or at the very least egotistical (as some of the previous comments have implied). I wouldn't waste my money.

Do you have a letter from Mensa saying you're good enough to get in? If so, keep that with all of your other achievements. :)

I scored 149 on one of the TV IQ test thingies once. Its never helped me in life - and I doubt being about to say "I've joined MENSA" would either. At best its a small talking point.

Mind you, it seems it doesn't stop people boasting about high IQ scores, when clearly they are telling porkies! Just one more thing to laugh at I suppose!

mensa was 152 when I joined. Complete waste of time and I had to pay money to be in it!!

No benefits at all then??

Isn't it a bit like getting a certificate certifying you are sane.

What would be the point in waving that about :p
And they want you to pay for it. Is that an intelligent option???

I have not recieved any feedback, but have just reread my last comment. Apologises if I have offended anyone. I should have considered my comments more carefully. I was going to edit and remove comment but as another has quoted from it it would not be so easy.

Sorry.
