I was gonna go for teh Asus, but realised for a £100 more it really is worth it! Currently posting from it now. Size is great, runs all programs at great speed, and a great amount of memory (80gb) for watching movies at night as i am doing now!

Great little machine!

if i had the money i would go for it but im on a tight budget of max 150 pounds. what do you lot think i should get a dell d600 or a asus 701 4gb?

oh and is the 4gb enough to have xp runing or will it be very tight?

I'm typing this on mine now. It's good enough for light use like browsing a few web pages but the screen size is a little bit too small and you do have to move windows about to see everything in them. I can't comment on any specifics about XP since mine runs Linux but with it's fast processor and reasonable amount of ram I wouldn't expect any problems 4GB should be enough for XP.

If you do want a laptop for varied use I'd buy a second hand 12" one though.

I already have a laptop but would like something smaller and lighter that i can use in bed at night, just to bascially chat on MSN and browse facebook, myspace etc

Can anybody recommend a cheap model of the asus and one out of the box how easy are they to set up... i'm totally useless at stuff like this lol and i think maybe XP would be easier as i'm used to it...:)

hmm, 4gb is very tight I think

I have the 900 version, lovely little thing. £269 from toys r us.

XP is great on it, screen is just about right for it, and even better for films.

Go for Linux if it comes with all the programs want to use, the interface is much better suited to that size of screen than the desktop-style one that XP uses. The major problem with the Linux version is that it's not that easy to add new program shortcuts (on the 701 anyway, they've probably fixed that on the 900).

The 701 4G model (make sure it's the one with the webcam) at £150 is an option or you could spend a big more and get a 900 with a higher resolution screen for £220. The 800x480 resolution on the cheaper one is fine for MSN and some webpages but I don't know about myspace/facebook. I'd guess the bigger screen was better for them.

can these be used with a mouse?

Yeah, they're full computers so they can be used with all the peripherals a normal computer could be. Mouse, keyboard, external sound card, printer, scanner, TV tuner and so on (Linux support required for some of them of course but that's getting fairly common these days).
