Automated cold telephone calling

To stop annoying cold calling, I've got my phone number as ex directory and also signed up to the "prefered service" meaning I should never get any cold calls at all.

However, it seems there are now lots of companies out there flouting this and completely ignoring it. They dial your number, then you end up with a minutes speel about consolidating your debts and such like then press 5 if you are interested.

I keep getting them - and the number is always withheld.

Just had one a couple of minutes ago. They apologised and said they will remove my number. But they never do!

This one was from "UK Consolidation"...... but she hung up when I started asking where they were based (to try to track them.)

Anyone else get this - or am I just priviledged? Keeps happening on my work phone as well!

No i keep having problems as well. I'm supposed to have been removed with the telephone preference agency too. It's very annoying. I tend to either hang up on them without a word or just put the phone down on the bench and let them talk to fresh air until they realise no one is there! am i mean??? lol
#2
just say you are 14, they'll stop calling if they call your mobile. they'll stop bothering you if you are a minor

we are ex directory and registered with telephone preference service but we keep getting calls from an international number which says we have won a holiday to Bermuda or somewhere similar and press a particular number to be connected to an agent. Obviously we don't press any numbers, just hang up but it's bloomin' annoying and there seems to be nothing we can do about it

Geezer, can you not pay your provider to have number withheld blocked? I am with bulldog, and the service is free for me, but no one can ring me if they withhold their number, they get a polite message to not hold and redial.....i get cold calls mind, but, one every 3 months but i can deal with that, since when it rings i ignore it anyways lol since only bulldog have the number and they can call my mobile :)

Tell them your interested but have to go out urgently and tell them if they give you their number you will call them back.

I doubt very much they would do that. I think the only way would be to get them to send you something.... but then they have your address as well!

Or do as I do. When they ask are you the owner of the house I say no but I'll get them. Put the phone down on the side and wait about 5 mins for the click of them putting it down. Haven't had these calls in quite a while since I started doing that.

Not quite the same here. Its an automated call. You dont speak to someone until you dial a specified number. But thats not the point. Thay are breaking the law by calling in the first place.

Shengis, i don't really wanna get involved in all that tbh, cos simply put, i don't think he should, i don't think they should be legally allowed to do so, but i cannot introduce legislation just offer a quick if not cheap fix. He may get lucky, like i say, i do not pay for the service, some providers do......

Had and automated 1 last night even though ex-directory and registered with pref service.
As it was a recording no one to complain to .....1471 didn't have the number so stuck.
#11
wouldent it be wonderfull to have a report this call as spam button on your phone like googlemail
#12
We usually get one where all you hear on the other end is a constant beeping sound and they always come in 3's within a few minutes of each other; 9.00, 9.02, and 9.04 etc.

I love the calls with a real person on the end, the hold button on our phone plays some really funky retro hold music which I stick on until they hang up.
#13
I always try & sell them the stuff I cant get rid of on Ebay, THIS ALWAYS WORKS & they cant wait to get off the phone.:whistling:

Me neither tbh:thumbsup: I posted the same sort of thing as Guv a while back. In the last week the wife has answered 3 calls from Talk Talk who claim they have our telephone service but not our internet. Very odd as Onetel does both. Yeah I know, OT is owned by TT. Be nice if they knew that and stopped calling though:roll:

I have them all the time and im with the preference service too Ive completely lost with them but now I usually bluff the whole thing out and ask if I can get a quick Cheque as im currently in the process of Bankruptcy (after about 10min of taking all the details) totally ****** them off.
#17
Tell them they're breaking the law - soon gets them to stop I've found with the few that have managed to get through. ;-)

Yes we have had a few lately, I usually ask how they gained access to a military line and are they aware that we are tracking the call and will raid their business etc, they never call again!!

Quite amusing!

Its the "Telephone Preference Scheme" AKA TPS.

Sorry, one of my pet hates. :whistling:
#21
The TPS works, but if the company is registered overseas or calls from overseas the TPS can do nothing.

Get an answering machine and set it to answer after two rings. They soon give up. I never get any cold calls now.

well i had an annoying sales call (with an indian accent) at 3am once! i was so annoyed for the rest of the day.

the last time one called, i said "are you kidding me?!" (very stern, posh and annoyed voice) and slammed the phone down.

Simple solution - get a nice premium rate number, and post it all over the place so you get plenty of rubbish calls, and use a dect phone with an auto answer + queuing system just like the big companies - you'll soon love cold callers.

How would I go about organising that then?

Any good deals about for a nice premium rate number?

Can I get Quidco on that ?:)

I got one when i was working at Whsmith (they called smiths) telling us that we had won a holiday to florida, i was like "everyone here?" and they were like "Thats correct" i was like sweeet holidays for all hundred people in the store. They hung up on me then :\

Same way i'd guess that Say No to 0870 works. There'd be an alternate number would be my best guess :)

Yes as family and friends say hello so I pick up the phone

this really gets my goat as well - it's usually ppl trying to get me to move phone service. I let them waffle on until I get bored and tell then I have no BT line (on cable for 10 years or so) and they say I need a BT line and I say 'I know' ...... :w00t:

Vonage are being a pain at the minute - they keep ringing and launching into their 'everyone will be using internet phone within a year' rubbish. Then you get transferred to a supervisor to finalise the deal, at which point I put the phone down. One of their salesman rang back twice apologising for cutting me off when transfering me .... didn't ring back a third time tho

AND I HATE COMPANIES WHO DON'T ANSWER WHEN YOU PICK UP THE PHONE :x The last one didn't have number withheld - some credit company (Advantage I think) - so I rang it and abused the switchboard operator. This wasn't clever but it was the 3rd call of this kind in one day and I work at home!

And I have registered with the TPS but it desn't seem to have made a difference

Got exactly the same call the other night, I was tempted to press 5 at the end to give them a piece of my mind but was too scared that I would be charged a fortune for the call as part of the scam.

I too am Ex Directory and am signed up to the TPS, I have had one's similar saying I have won Florida holidays too, obviously ****** timeshare things.

If its to do with finance i always say now "my husband is a financial advisor". If its to do with kitchens (space design) i say we have a kitchen business and if its to do with anything else then i tell them to......................:)

I refuse to pay to stop these calls as often its blocks calls from your local hospital etc. I have seen notices in the hospital about it.
#33
Had the "You have won a holiday in Florida" one yesterday, very annoying!
