You have to be VERY careful searching on things like "AVG free".

Lots of web sites that are NOT AVG sites will set themselves up so they APPEAR to be AVG but are in fact not.

For example if I search on "AVG free" the top result of my search gives this site:
>AVG.Free-AntiVirus-Now.com

And it gives you a TOTALLY different product.

You need this page (scroll to the bottom to download it from the actual AVG site).

PC Pro magazine did a review of security suites this month.

They reviewed 15 security suites, and PC Tools came out bottom with 2 points.

See here

You have to understand the difference between a security PRODUCT and security SUITES.

Security Suites are normally a combination of a number of products packaged together in one product offering "complete protection".

The AVG product which is free is mainly just a ANTI VIRUS product (AVG also do a security suite but you have to pay for that)

If you install AVG Anti Virus you also need a Firewal (ZoneAlarm do a free one), and you need one or more spyware / malware products (Malwarebytes is a good one, I also use Adaware).

So if you DONT put a security suite on your PC you need to put a number of individual products.

I actualy prefer Avast Anti Virus to AVG nowadays. I used to use AVG but it kept giving me problems so now moved over to Avast.

If you don't want to purchase a suite, you can mix and match individual free components, e.g. firewall, anti-virus, anti-spam, etc.

Download.com is a good source of reputable freebies, as well as paid for products.

Comodo is better - ZA is a resource hog.
