There are lots of DVD players that play AVI and other formats that have come from the Internet.

Let me try and find you one. You will probably do better looking for a a term calledDivX. This will probably give you some better results.

You're looking for one that plays DivX and that should take care of it.

I am beig proper dum then, as i have a DVDHDR and that had USB / Divx support, but i didnt know that you would be able to play AVI. I have been converting them to Divx (very slowly)

What is your budget and TV.

I ask this because I purchased the LG BD370 Blu-Ray/DVD player as a gift and used the CD iso hack to make the DVD part region free. It is now a Blu-Ray player, region free upscaling DVD player and it has usb port that allows you to play Avi and HD MKV files with a GUI similar to my popcornhour.

TV is a crapy little CRT at the mo, but also looking to upgrade that in the not so distent future.

That was the other option i was going to go down was the media centre / Popcornhour A110

No point if you don't have an HDTV.

I would say get hold of an Upscaling DVD player with a usb port and AVI compatibility that has a scart (as well as HDMI) so you can use it on your CRT then in the future if you get a flat screen you can switch to the HDMI and use the upscaling.

your dvdhdr should play avi files

AVI is a container (divx is just a compression format commonly held within AVI files).

Just burn them to disk as a data file and hey presto...........

You don't need to convert to divx file extension at all - you can have a divx codec movie with an .avi extension...
