Howdy, I've got a couple of avi's (around 3 gb's worth) that I have downloaded (perfectly legally of course), however when trying to play them on my 360 i get; status code: 80-C00DF242.
These should play as they are avi's, i'm guessing there is a coding issue, what's the easiest way to re-code them or just to get them to play on my 360 without simply streaming? Rep for help.

I'm not sure about actually converting the files as 3 gb's would take quite a while, I just wasn't sure if there was any way I could simply change the extensions or anything like that, they are after all avi. files just for some reason not the same variety that the 360 can play.

Have you updated the console recently? Xbox 360 will play xvid and divx 'avi' files but only with the most recent updates and not hd avi files (ie xvid 720/1080)

AVI shud be supported i know ive watched Hancock on my 360 and that was Avi

Wierd... maybe theres something wrong with one of the codecs... something the 360 dont like cos i know they are extremely fussy when it comes to playing videos that arnt purchased from the market place...

I'd guess its a codec problem, although I don't own a 360 so don't know it's limitations.

There used to be a program you could download to check what codecs you needed to play individual avi's, you could try that then check against 360 info to see if it should be playing.

Edit: apparently 360's only like standard xvid/divx with mp3 audio codec. you can re encode the files to mp4 or wmv apparently they will work fine then.

Since the nxe dashboard update you need to redownload the divx codec, Redownload the codec and you should be fine

However if you have redownloaded the divx codec since the nxe update It means the avi's are not in a codec the xbox 360 can play, either the video or audio on your avi's are unreadable by the xbox 360. I believe the xbox 360 plays divx that use the MP3 codec, otherwise you'll get the message your on about.

The only way I know of getting around this is by converting the video to MP4 file type or wmv, I prefer wmv since that 100% works on the xbox 360 aswell as being able to be uploaded to my ftp so i can watch the videos when not at home. But converting to wmv would be the best option.

it goes by minutes not file size. When I put a disk in windows dvd maker says I have 150 mins, have just tried two different files of the same film, one is 700mb and one is 12gb. they both said 143 minutes of 150 used.

I had a similar problem but after having a little play with it i seemed to fathom it.

My case appeared to be a sharing issue, some would play, some wouldnt and others didnt appear.
I went back to the host PC and changed the ACTUAL AVI file properties to shared on the network.

Voila, AVI's now play
