Avoid buying or trading stolen goods

Was reading about two people who have bought HTC Hero's from ebay and even a second hand shop which have stopped working after 2-3 weeks coz they have been reported stolen and then barred by the operators.

This site offers a check service for all sorts of goods not just mobiles. All u need is a serial number.

I bought one off here. Brand new in box for daughters birthday "Blackberry Bold" cost £260 and didn't work after 3 weeks so I have learn't my lesson. It cost me £80 to re-board the phone

Just what i was looking for cos i've just bought a Hero off ebay (love it by the way). Hmmm what about when you buy stuff off the likes of CEX etc, do they phone the operators up first before taking a phone in and make sure it don't get barred?

Also Op what if i use this site, the report comes clean, then the phone gets blocked. WIll they stop it from getting blocked?

Cheers

So you buy a phone. use the check site. find out you have a stolen phone then you are still stuck with phone or hand to police so still out of pocket.

This is only good to use before you buy and still does not result in a 100% legal phone.

why is this in FS?? what are you selling? site is pointless anyways imho-an item could come up "clean" now and still be barred in a week-its meaningless.

It will only tell you if you know the IMEI before you purchase and if the phone is already barred, if it is barred later and you have already bought it then you already know its blocked no point in logging on and checking it then, lol... You could buy a phone and have the original owner block it 6 months later, lol... People sell their contact phones too, technically those are not owned by them they are owned by the network until the contract period is over, so if the person doesnt pay their bills the network can block the phone too, so it doesnt have to just be reported stolen... :) People dont take that into acount when they see a person selling a phone a couple of pounds cheaper than anywhere else... We get people in every day saying they bought a phone from ebay and can we unlock it, check the phone and its blocked...

Whilst taking all of the above comments on board, the buyer who bought from a shop said
"The sms confirmation was enough for the shop I bought it from to take it back and give me a full refund."
So it is not perhaps as pointless as u may think ;) If nothing else it gives u something in writing to attempt to get ur money back with.

Also as stated in my post it is not purely for mobile 'phones it covers loads of other electricals where barring isn't an issue.

Sounds like the shop buyer I quoted above may have bought from a second-hand shop so I doubt if they check them first.
Re your second question, no idea but I doubt it as the 'phone could have been sold on by then I guess. Might be some info on the site tho if u have a look or email and ask b4 u pay the fee.

btw have u had a look at http://androidforums.com/htc-hero/20511-htc-hero-tips-tricks-useful-apps.html? Great site for fast tips and tricks and how to's :)

Im not dissing the site at all, it is a good idea to have a database like that available as long as it is properly updated by all the networks, etc... however if you already have the phone there are pretty obvious signs that the phone is blocked.

E.G
Orange
"Sim Card Registration Failed"
- 3 Reasons
1, Either the phone cant get reception at all thus cant register on the network (not likely)
2, The sim card is turned off by Orange, check it works in another phone.
3, The phone is blocked, reported lost or stolen, IMEI is blacklisted by the networks.

T-Mobile
Will get reception, cant make or receive calls...

etc... etc...

The shop that refunded the phone, probably bought it second hand and didnt bother testing it fully, you shouldnt need to go onto a website to get your money back, as soon as you had shown the phone to them im sure they would have known it would have been stolen or blocked by the network and refunded the money to stop themselves from getting into trouble...

Cheers for link - rep added! Been on it already, really useful site that one. Really annoyed i can't update mine to thte latest Android software, keeps saying "Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device. ". Description says UK unbranded in white, which is what i think i got? Hmmmmm

Anyway not a fan of the PC software, prefer the Nokia one cos it actually has some features LOL

Point is that u know all of the above. Many ppl incl me don't. The guy was asking on Hero forum why his phone wasn't working assuming since he had got it unlocked and changed sims that had caused the problem. Obviously he didn't know any of what u just posted. It was only when someone suggested to him that it might be stolen and barred and gave him that site to check that he was enlightened.
Thanks for the info tho
