Avoid throwing your old 'stuff' into landfill this Christmas with Freecycle.org

Let's face up to it - every single one of us is the archetypal consumer, otherwise we wouldn't be using this site! So we are all guilty of buying the latest 'stuff' (at great prices ;)) and then discarding our 'old stuff' for new better 'stuff' whenever we see fit.

What happens to all our old 'stuff' then? Well every year we throw 175 million tons of waste into landfill and some of this is the 'stuff' we buy from HUKD merchants every day.

So before this gets pulled down by mods for not being a proper deal please can people consider the following as an alternative to lobbing their old stuff in the tip this Christmas:

Rather than binning your old 'stuff' consider first if someone else might be able to make use of it?

If so, stick it on your local freecycle network and help reduce the amount of 'stuff' we dump in landfill.

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.

Thanks for listening and now on with the rampant festive consumerism!

Christmas isn't the best time to freecycle stuff. More info to follow.....

Edit:

'A Freecycle memeber has reported that having had several items offered and collected over the last few days she came home last night to find that her house had been broken into and trashed and a lot of various items have been stolen and a lot of it was Christmas related.

Although she cannot link it directly to Freecycle and is not making any type of allegation that it is at all related she feels that a timely warning should be sent to all member.

Please can members be very careful when exchanging information with regard to collection and location and the times you will be available for collection.

In other words please try not to let people know when your house will be empty and see that your house security is at a standard acceptable to the insurance companies.
Also this is why we like to keep the location part of the message vague until you have established an interaction and at least have some computer details to hand.

Keep it safe and keep it careful at all times.

If anyone has any questions about freecycle feel free to ask me me, as I am a group owner (Chesterfield), I'll do my best to answer them.

Thanks to OP for giving freecycle some publicity, repped.

Haven't some freecycle groups defected to a similar organization?

I was a member of the Chesterfield group, but had to leave due to not being able to stop all the barrage of daily emails.

Some groups have moved to freegle, its in dispute about how Deron (the founder of freecycle has been handling things, trying to impose too many things on the uk ones)

You could set it to daily digest or to receive none at all, if you pm me your email I can set it for you.

me too after the last fiasco i had offering stuff, you get the same people emailing for items, you tell them sorry but no and then you get abuse, im still getting emails off one guy i said no too as he a flaming TV off me.
never again will i use freecycle, it the charity shop dont want it then in the skip it goes!

I dont know how other group owners handle it but I ask members to report any problems with other members to me, I then archive them and if the same person receives complaints against them I will warn them, then if need be ban
