Took my laptop in to a local pc repair shop as the screen was faulty.

Guy phoned me up today and quoted £170 (ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY POUNDS!!!) to fix it.

Told him to forget it, will collect on Monday (with a plan to punting the carcass on the bay).

Went to look for the repair receipt (without which they reckon I will not get my lappy back) and it's not there anymore!!!

What if they refuse to give me it back? Do I have any legal recourse, or am I now royally screwed?

Hopefully you'll get it back just get them to ring you on the same number (if it's home phone get whoever is at he to ring you on your mobile and pass the phone to the guy at the shop).
Why don't you just set the laptop up with an external dispaly, if it's worthwhile?
good luck

They can't just keep your laptop, and you can prove that its yours. If they've phoned you, they have info about you, presumably the minimum of your mobile number and your name. Probably your address, too. Go down with some photo ID and a copy of your phone bill for an indisputable combination of your face, your name, your address, and your phone nimber, and they really can't deny that you are who you say you are or that they have your property.

Thought about it, but too unwieldy for armchair surfing

I'm in a really big huff about all of this!

Glasgow - It's an HP dv9754ea

Was a goody, but I ain't paying a quarter of what I paid for it for a dodgy screen :x

If you can source the part and send it to me i'll happily do it for a small fee... if you get it back...

try ebay for a replacement screen(if you get your laptop back)

Thanks guys...

tbh, the screen on it's own is ~£100 - for an extra few hundred I could have a brand new lappy of similar spec.

I know it sounds a bit strange, but the experience has put me off the laptop, would rather start afresh with something new.
