Baby kitty has the cold, what to do?

I got him a week ago, he's a ragdoll kitten, 16 weeks old.

He keeps sneezing, and the film bits inside his eyes keep being over about half his eyes sometimes. He has sleep round his eyes and dark bits around his nose (think it's running). What should I do? He's sleepy a lot as well but this may be just down to him being a baby.

try one of the free on-line vets on the internet - quick search should find one. I did this last year when my boy was ill and they helped a lot. Hope he better soon....

Yes, I know thats what I should do but vets charge a fortune and if it's only a cold then they wont give me anything for it so I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of cat colds and what they did to get them through it.

I have seen very young kittens succumb to what you may think is a slight cold. Bit like babies that have not yet built up protections. Probably is best to get a vet to have a look
#10
I wouldnt take any chances , straight to the vets.

how do you know its not cat flu? therefore needs vet treatment.....anti-biotics, anti-inflammatories

if you cant afford the fees why get a ragdoll kitten (which are HUNDREDS of pounds)?

its a responsibility thing hun....

you're responsible for his health...

Have to get him checked out if you're worried.

Try the pdsa if you're concerned about costs? x

Hi - we had a kitten years ago with cold like symptoms like your baby, sneezes, sticky eyes etc. and when we took him to the vets he diagnosed cat flu, so I wouldn't hesitate. Ours was fine after treatment :o) Good luck with him, he sounds lovely.
#20
A multi?

I asked for advice. If I was really concerned I would take him to the vet. All I wanted was a cat owners advice. He's not at deaths door he has cold symptoms and is eating and playing as normal, so I don't see the point in paying about £30 for the vet to tell me what someone else could tell me.

I've reported you anyway. Get some manners.

Well see he's had his injections so I was thinking it can't be cat flu then?

needs to go to the vets end of.

if you cant afford the vets you should not have pets.
#23
Still best to get a vets second opinion as he is so small. If he has already had his shots hopefully nothing major but you will kick yourself if something happens and you didnt go

sometimes they can....my cat had hers and still got very ill

OK thanks. I'll take him tomorrow then. It's just that he's been fine really and playing as usual. I wasn't sure if him being sleepy was normal due to his age. Plus when I got him, he was really sleepy in the woman's house too. Actually he had his runny nose when I got him. But I assumed because she was a professional breeder and has rosettes for showing all her cats that she mustn't have thought it serious so I was maybe overreacting by worrying..

Yeah true. He's been sneezing more today than yesterday which is why I've thought maybe I should be worried. I emailed he breeder about it anyway see what she says but she hasn't came back to me yet.

might be nothing...... sometimes they do get allergies...but even so it would still need treatment....and if it is something serious the sooner you get treatment...the less it costs..( from someone who recently spent over £1000 on vets bills :x )
Fingers crossed for the poor wee soul

Thanks.

Oh no, what happened? Have you got insurance now?

I'm really not bothered about paying £30 if he needs to see a vet I just thought taking him to the vet was overreacting that's all, but I'm not so sure now after some of these cat flu comments.

I have no idea about charges these days but I used to take mine to a very good vet at the local pets at home store. They are open store opening times so easy to get seen if you have one close. Also easy for parking as usually part of a shopping estate. Dont know if there's one near you.

My vet is just down the road (I already have another cat), I just need to register little Oscar with them.

What's a multi btw? That earlier poster reported me for being one :?

great......I would suggest taking out pet insurance on this breed of cat
#37
Does he sleep with the larger cat. Could have picked up a sniffle from him.
If he sleeps alone maybe he is used to sleeping with mum and other kitties and has got a bit chilled at night.

I will. I've got a months free anyway from the breeder

No my other cat hisses at him! He'll come round though. He sleeps beside me at night. He had a runny nose when I got him that's why I haven't been too worried because I thought if it was anything to worry about the breeder would have sorted it.
#39
Just in case anyone was wondering, I took him to the vets and the vets given him some eyedrops, he's got a wee head cold the vet said. He's also got earmites, so he's not liking me at the minute as I'm putting things in his eyes and his ears, poor baby.
