bought a 500gb external to do back ups after nearly losing 200gb's worth of family photo's - was a real wake up call. Now do a back up on a monthly basis, just to be on the safe side

Problem I have is that my external 500GB HDD that I bought to back-up onto has packed in.

If it just vanished, you could try something like Knoppix to see if it can read anything from the partition, but yep the best time to back stuff up is generally two seconds after you've lost something.

I keep my valuable data backed up in five places, may sound daft but you never know what's coming and the data can't be replaced. Been through it too many times having to tell people their data is gone and they should be taking backups...
