Have an old desktop (XP).. Hard drive now dead but had done a back onto external HD. Copied contents of external drive onto laptop (Vista) but cannot open it, says need to find a prog to open it.

Web takes me to XP page and then I get lost. Any sugestions much appreciated please, not too complicated, am non techy.

Am very impressed that I had done a backup and it seems to have worked, knew it was too good to be true!

What program did you use to do the backup?

As djfluff says, which program did you use to backup the hard drive? That's the program that your laptop is complaining about not being able to find. You'll need to install it on to your laptop.

Or you might have to take ownership of the files you backed up :-D

If it was a permissions issue, they would have got 'acess is denied' rather than looking for a program.

Thanks guys, reliable as ever.

Sorry but really don't know what prog I used on XP to backup, nothing special probably Windows own backup I assumed. Did not do or buy anything special to do it.

As I said, gave up when I got to the Windows site today. Must be very common backing up on XP then putting on to Vista, or am I being too simple on this?

Is the backup file just one huge complete file? What is its filetype?
