Bad Eggs !

This is my first post, and probably a really stupid one...... apologies.

I've just been to my fridge to get myself some lunch, and because I'm so disorganised, all that's in there are some out-of-date eggs - best before 30 Jun 08.

Does anyone know if these are still safe to eat. I'm sure back in the 'ol days, you could keep eggs for ages, and it's only within the last few years that they've put a best before date on them.

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks for a hungry newcomer !

Don't you put them in water to see if they float or sink,

edit: if it floats throw it away, should stay on the bottom if it's fresh

theres a reason theres now a use buy date .not best before

Throw them at the neighbour's windows that's what they do here.

just crack them into a bowl one by one and look at them. if eggs are off they smell. they shouldnt be watery as far as i know-the whites should be quite jelly-like.
#9
If you stick them in a pint glass and they float then they are bad.

erm....I think.....

loulou is right, Im a chef and i would eat them if i checked them first, i just would'nt serve them out of date, but thats my choice.

Wow thanks you guys. I can't believe so many people have responded in so little time..... what a great site. I just hope I can think of more "important" things to post in future, as well as the rather trivial ones.

Chat again soon.

PS. I've just done the water test and my eggs are completely Vertical.

I guess that means I'll have dry toast for lunch :-)

best before is justa guide, food only deteriorate in quality after the BB date. Use by is the more important one foods eaten after a use by date can kill the old, sick and young and make healthy people really ill. A day or 2 is risky 6 weeks is asking for trouble

Make an omelette to someone you hate with the bad eggs!

crack one open - if it smells it's off.
years ago eggs had stickers on the box with the sell by date on, i worked for a supermarket chain at the time. when they ran out of date we just used to take the stickers off lol
I've eaten eggs much more out of date than urs.
