Bang & Olufsen- What's the deal with these?

My partners Dad brought one of these recently, a 42", nice TV, picture is good and the speaker is good, but it cost £8,500 ish which sounds astronomical for a TV, when I purchased a 42" PX80 Panny, for £530 which I think is a superb TV

So what makes B&O so good, more expensive than the rest? Because it's not £8k better than my Panny

Got to agree. B&O is Kellogg's Corn Flake of audio visual.:viking:

They use the same panels as other TV makers, but they often just add a few extra video processors, in and place them in a nicely styled case.

Worth the extra, not a chance you are better off just buying a top end tv pioneer kuro etc. Then buying a dedicated video processor, and you will get much better results.

Without sounding like i belong in a primary school, but my dad's just bought a 60" Pioneer Kuro, and it is the dogs whatsits, i know they're not cheap, but there's no way any telly could be better than that, no matter the price!!

I'm after the 37px80, glad you're impressed with it

You are paying for the quality of the manufacture and the styling

My GF bought a B&O Hi Fi 30 years ago (splashed 2 months pay on it) and it's still going strong - and in all that time it's had one repair when she broke a key on the cassette deck

are they really THAT much better? I mean, thousands of quid better than say,a sony bravia?

Ive never got it tbh-just like the folk who drool over linn audio equipment-I just refuse to believe that the human ear can hear and extra ten grands worth of quality.

not knocking anyone who wants one btw, just dont understand the fascination.

My parents spent £4,500 on a B&O sound system about 10 years ago. It's still going strong now and the sound is simply incredible.

They got a flatscreen B&O TV too about 6 years ago for around £2,000, but that looks dated now compared to massive TVs you can get these days. Although it is on a stand that moves around by using the remote control.

Oh, and they bought a B&O remote that operates the TV and the sounds system....£350!

Silly money, but they are the Rolls Royce of home entertainment.

its the sound too i think....

I'm sorry but b&o are hardly known for their sound quality. It's the styling that 90% goes on

Bit like the difference between a Rolls-Royce and a BMW. If you've got no class, you don't appreciate it! :whistling:

I have heard better Bose sound systems than my parents B&O but nothing, nothing at all that looks as cool!

Waving your hand in front of a glass fronted CD player to open it up never gets old. Ever!

There are so not the Rolls Royce of sound quality, you're paying for the badge and the style - they are designer consumer electronics. There are far better sounds hi-fi systems (and no doubt better looking TVs) for less money than B&O stuff.

Still, if you want all the style of Alan Partridge...

It is, the TV slowly and silently turns to where you are sat. There are left and right arrows on the remote that you can adjust it.

Pretty pointless, but it looks cool!

THis is the CD player they have:

With floor standing speakers that cost twice as much as my car!

And this is what £350 worth of TV remote looks like:

I've never even heard of them.

I worked 17 years in music shops and met some real hifi nuts including a character who actually cemented his amp into a well he dug in the centre of his living room cos he swore it improved the sound quality-the record deck he had cost 2 grand just for a replacement stylus!!

lunacy imho but each to their own-Ill stick to my ipod touch!

And you consider Bose to be good

And I always though Bose stood for buy other sound equipment

They are both poor in sound quality for the price, you can get get a much nicer sounding system for they same over the top price they charge.

You won't be disappointed for the price. Especially considering 90% of material I watch is SD (xbox been the only HD source I have)

They have both of these, the Stereo sounds very good I must admit, but the Dad upgraded to the 6 disc stereo, again it's very good

Recently he upgraded the remote to this:
http://www.wired.com/images/article/magazine/1512/wl_olufsen_beo5_remote.jpg

(No idea how to post pictures)!

It's touch screen remote, like an ipod, £550, silly money
They have the lot though, 2 TV's, 2 Stereo's, 3 Telephones, separate speakers in a different room, even a B&O alarm

The kit is very good, no denying that, the picture and sound is pretty good, I just wondered if it's worth the extra £8k, suppose different people spend their money in different ways

Thanks for all your replies, I've enjoyed to hear different posters opinions!
