Bank Charges.....

Just wondering if it was possible for banks to take your money for no reason when you havent bought anything!
I checked my bank statement online yesterday noticed some money was missing and i called my bank up incase of fraud and they said that i apparently bought something on the 29th of June worth £47.97 :O which i deffo didnt and i asked them to tell me which merchant i bought from at that time and they said they couldnt tell me cos the money was outstanding :? same thing happened to my friend yesterday as well and she said her account was debited as well without her authorisation and she called her bank and they wouldnt tell her where her money had gone either, and now shes telling me that sometimes banks might need money and 'borrow' from us without us knowing to buy shares or whatever and they will return the money eventually .... i was just wondering if this was true and has happened to anyone else before?.. thanks

Sounds like card fraud, but they should known to tell you this,as this what it sounds like to me.
Specially if your sure you not bought anything for 49.97.

The bank can't take money out of your account! thats crazy...... tell them that you didnt make the purchase and the money need putting back into your account and have them send a new card for extra security purposes, as its card fraud

Need moeny to buy shares is a version of the advert where they are getting money to pay for the bubbly at the shareholders meeting!!

Tell them that you don't recognise the transaction and are calling to report it.

As an aside if you and your friend have had the same thing were you toegether on the 29 Jun and forgotten what it might be? A restaurant or shopping bill maybe? Have you both signed up to something online? Subscription that comes out at end of month?

Check you Banks Online facility, it will tell you where your money has gone.

No, banks cannot without good reason, help themselves to your money.

i called the bank twice yesterday to ask them and they said they dont know where they money has gone and they told me what my last card purchase was on friday and i remember that and i have no outstanding DD set up cos i only have 2 at the moment and they've been paid already. i was told that once the money had been cleared they would tell me who the merchant was and that i would get no bank charges if i went over my overdraft limit :?

i havent actually bought anything worth £47.97 recently thats why its odd cos i would remember last thing i bought from the bodyshop was £21.90 and my banks confirmed that it was my last transaction

Do you bank online? Whats the abbreviation for the transaction? If it was DEB, I would suggest you waiting until it clears your account and then it might be clearer where the money has gone.

Banks do NOT just take money from your account.

yea sometimes i notice the odd £1 or 2 disappear from my account but its usually returned after a week, you'd think if they were gonna take someone's money they'll from someone who has money not a student account

yea i bank online and i can see they've taken my money just doesn't say who took it when i called them up the automated message says the money in my account is the same as it is online but when i asked the person im speaking to, my current balance doesn't not include the missing money which is just weird!

I had something similar on holiday in Thailand. I had £1200 in my account, I had spent £600 and went to get more cash out of an ATM. My available balance showed as £0. I checked my balance online in a hotel straight away and it said the same, had to phone the bank (ouch on the phone charges, a mobile from Thailand!) and they couldn't tell me what money had been taken, where I had used my card or anything so there I am, skint and and poo*ng a brick in the East. Couple of days later (after an emergency Western Union transfer from Mum n Dad) it turned out the bank had deducted the amount AND 'earmarked' it therefore showing an empty account.
Moral is, the bank will not always show where, to who or even how much you have spent on your card for at least three working days. Which can leave us in limbo at times. If you definitely have not used your card or signed up to anything then yes, get a new card. If you feel brave enough, ride it out and wait and see where the money has gone.
P.S. The bank refunded my phone fees after I went in the branch! Phew!

If the money was just taken off your available balance then it was a card transaction.

The funds from this would be held aside for a few days till it debits completely, when this happens not all banks can tell where the money is going to go and some have to wait till it comes out completely to tell you.

If the funds are not taken within a few days then the money is released back onto your account however the company CAN still take the money. (they have a few month)

I would advise you to keep an eye on your account over the next few days. Take note of the available balance and any transactions you make, if you see any money coming out and it wasn't you who made the purchase then call the bank, you will most likely have to speak with the VISA dispites/Card dispites team and they will look at getting the money back for you which can take a few weeks.
