Bank transfers - are they safe?

I notice that some people when selling stuff on here pay by bank transfer. Is this safe?
I've read a link from the Ebay forums which was saying this is quite a safe way to pay and recieve money but then there are threads on here about possible scams to get your bank details eg this one
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79066

I have online banking so can make online payments. So why is bank transfer safe when to receive a payment you have to give them (the other party) your bank details? Just a bit confused.....

It is safe. The only details that they need to make a payment, are your account number and sort code.

In fact you give these out every time you write a cheque.

EDIT : I read this wrong. I thought they wanted to make a payment into YOUR bank account.

Its not safe by no means but then if your a trusted seller and been here along time like cobweb dino then im sure a bank transfer would be totally safe.

Just watch out for people who dont have alot of rep and posts.

No-one can do a thing with your sort code and account number other than give you money.

They can't withdraw at a bank without I.D and a signature and they can't use your details to buy anything either.

Actually writing a cheque is even worse than that because you give them a nice copy of your signature too. I hate cheques.

Thanks for the responses - it pretty much agrees with what the website was saying.

Who are you calling a cobweb

Bank Transfers (BACS) are very safe for a seller, in my opinion. I have posted my Bank Details on here many times and nobodies paid me, yet. :whistling:
Not as safe for a buyer though.
I agree with the other comments, the details you give for BACS is less than you put in a cheque.
You must 'check out' the seller before agreeing to BACS.

I'd say its one of the safest methods.

Yes you give your bank details (sort code and account number) but when did you ever use that to buy anything? you'll normally use a debit card for that, which gives out a lot more details and would be worrying if someone cloned/knew.

or as lots above say - a cheque, with all those details and a signature! nice!

From my selling experience on ebay I personnaly prefer it to other methods.
(and I can check it online)
