The nightlife is all around La Rambla & it's side streets from Placa De Catalunya down to the Christopher Columbus monument. There is a good irish bar down there but beware it's also in the red light area :

In answer to what's it like - it's one of my favourite European cities & i have probably been to 150 non UK cities. You will love it :)

We found that in both Barcelona and Madrid that Irish type pubs often charge extra for the privalidge...maybe they are being too authentic and taking after Dublin prices! Also they didn't seem to have locals in them. Best to mix with local people in their bars/pubs, at least then you're paying same prices as them.
Only other bit of advice I have is to go to Madrid as well, or instead! It's brilliant.

only there for 2 nights, not really interested in making friends there lol. what about winter time do bars tend to stay open?

Each to their own on that one & i have argued Barcelona's case against Madrid many times on Virtualtourist. In my opinion Madrid is great for museums & possibly to look around the Bernabeu if you are a football fan but not much else. Agree the irish bars are expensive ( especially at the current euro rate ) but if you want a quality beer in Barcelona irish bars are the best :)

It's pretty much like England...open same times that they would usually.

Agh but the Irish pub I went to in Madrid had a wonky pool table, true Irish bar! haha.
There's definetly a lot more to Madrid than museums and the Bernabau, but there's pro's and con's to both places, so I wouldn't have any arguments really. I just enjoyed Madrid more.
