Barclays account problems

I put £1 cash in on 8th/9th June into my barclays.

It SHOULD be there the day you stick it in as its hard cash..

Over a week later and the money has finally cleared but I can't actually touch the money.

From looking at my mini statement it shows that it cleared on the 10th (Still slow).

However ableit this when I print out a balance reciept, it says this:

BALANCE AT CLOSE OF BUSINESS ON 15/06/09 : £1.20

CURRENT CLEARED FUNDS TIMED AT 17:40 ON 16/06/09 £0.20

Now I haven't spent anything in the last 24hrs with it, after all i've been waiting for the flamin money to show up in the account. I tried making a purchase today at GS for £0.99 and it wouldn't authorise it.

The fact is, I stuck in £1 more than a week ago. It should have cleared instantly.
and a week later, I still can't touch the flamin money..

A similar thing happened when I put £15.50 in about 1-2 weeks ago. That took a good 4-5 days to clear into the account.

Anybody know why?

lol.

I needed it to make sure I had enough in my account to buy something.

(I did indeed have enough)

Tim

But still, if it were £10+ it would be a royal pain... (

When you say you put the cash into your barclays how and where
ie at a Barclays bank?
Also at which cash machine did you get your mini statement?

I paid it into my local branch.

I got the statement from the cash machine outside the branch.

That blows my ideas out of the water then............
Just had another one though maybe the account has to have a
minimum balance of £1 to be classed as open therefore, although
the £1 is there, it cannot be spent............

if you seriously want immediate access to your money i think you should probably repeat what you did in a couple more banks. i would love to hear the results. my bank is fine until you reach a certain amount, then they hold it for ages stealing the intrest!!

i've put low amounts into both a nationwide and natwest account, both have been no bother whatsoever, the money is there instantly

might be due to a problem with barclays hardware see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8103271.stm

Barclays have had trouble today. Some sort of "technical gremlin"

Even cash that is paid in the branch won't clear until the next working day. Why ? because the paying in slip that you used to pay it in with has to go to the clearing bank (which I believe moved to MK) that night. It will then be put with billions of others racked up in what's called boats for sending through the scanner the following day (night work is debit outwork, dayshift is credit in). If all is ok with the slip (ie no-one has written below the line or folded it) the slip will go through the scanner, be photographed front/back and be read and the system will then credit your account. If the scanner doesn't like it or if it is for a small amount it then gets kicked electronically through to a key/balancing area. Here they input the amount (along with millions of others) and the system then credits your account (if it all balances out right). Barclays spent 50 million on their system that photographs both sides of credit slip/cheques etc and the balancing system but it doesnt believe you when you input 100 for £1 and asks you again and again and again to confirm.

However all the above doesn't help regarding cleared funds. It should show and certainly not take 4/5 days as you said the other monies took. You will need to speak to your branch about it. Once is a glitch, twice is dubious.

Could be that I just don't work there anymore that it's gone wrong LOL (kidding!).

You think that's bad, I remember when my Halifax cardcash account used to take something like 10 working days to clear cash deposited at my local branch!!

Simon012, I know what you mean about the £1 minimum balance, I accidentally transferred some money into two old Alliance & Leicester savings accounts which previously had a nil balance and I have never been able to withdraw the last £1 since! Not all banks are the same though, HSBC don't seem to mind me having 3 accounts with them with nil balances.
