Ok, I know there are broadband speed testers like http://www.speedtest.net, but the BBC one seems easier to use for people who don't know much about computers/internet.
Check your speed here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7416471.stm

ISP: Sky
Paying for: 16mb
Actual speed: 10.4mbps

I prefer www.speedtest.net as it gives you upload speed too...

I'm on 10Mbps up and down at work... 20Mbps/768kbps at home...

talk talk
paying for 8mbps
speed a whooping 0.6mbps

beanzy I'm on talktalk too
#6
8 mb talktalk...

Actually 2.3 mb.
#7
Did both tests and got completely different results. BBC's was 1.6MB, but speed test was 8983 kbp/s, which i think is 8MB???
#8
imranmaz im sick of talktalk...it sucks! but then they say whatever u get ull be slow cos ur too far from the exchnage or something?! is that true?
#9
i think it might be because BBC's only tests your speed over about half a second whereas speed test does it over around 10 seconds which would provide more of an accurate figure...
#10
BBC says 10mb... speedtest says just under 13mb... paying for 20mb on Virgin...
#11
Oo ok cool thanks for that. Will see when i get home how AOL performs!!!

not if we go for virgin i think...as they use optical.. I may be wrong.

tbh I would like faster but its just about ok for me Iwas thinking of moving to tiscalli. 0.6 is bad!

"be there" is also faster. but costs quite a bit more

BT - 8mb

BBC Says - 0.6mb
Speedtest.net says - 1.7mb :-S
#14
They usually word it upto -mb so if you are below why not change to the lower limit and save some money, its to with the distance you are from the junction/conection box i think and how meny people are using it. hope this helps

on-line speed testers are pretty meaningless, they don't take into account far too many variables and often mislead people into thinking they are getting a deal/speed worse than it actually is.
This is usually proliferated by BT to make people think theirs is the best

I find them to be quite accurate tbh.

if you divide your score by 8 then that is how many megabytes you can download at max. (the speed test score is megaBITS) 8bits = 1byte

so to see if its correct download some thing like nero demo and see how fast it is.... will probably be the same as the speed test divided by 8.

This tester is pretty useless. Probably due to the high volume of people trying to use it. Mine only showed up as 1.5 yet two others both show the true value closer to 5.5.

only measures DL speed. but it was accurate.

its usually not what you are paying for that matters, to see if you get a good connection you should compare your connection line speed to your download speed because not everybody can get 8MBps, for a good connection your line should be at least 70% efficient.

oh and for the record i am also on talktalks 8M

i'm connected at 4.2MBps which makes my connection roughly 78% efficient so it's not too bad,
