Beaches near Manchester.....!

OK - I know that there are no beaches technically near Manchester, but I shall explain what I mean.

We have a Boxer dog and are intending to take him to the beach to have a good run and a bit od a day out.

Was thinking Southport or Formby, but just wondering if anyone local to these areas (or any others - we're open to suggestion???) could recommend somewhere for us?

He is lively and does get very cheeky when other people and Dog's are about, so am really looking for a quiet(ish) stretch of sandy beach with preferably no turds floating in the water!!!!!

Anyone help us?

Don't have a dog, but my boss who lives in Aspull, near Wigan swears by Southport, he's there every weekend and even in the week when we get away from work by 4pm. It's like an hours drive or so

When we were kids, our dad used to take us to Ainsdale. He said it was nicer than Blackpool or Southport. Looking back, he probably meant it was a cheaper day out for him because it isn't so commercialised.

Southport is fairly muddy IMO.

And Southport is pretty busy too... depends on how far you're wanting to travel really- I live in the lake district near the beach and we're surrounded by nice quiet beaches- we're less than 2hrs away from manchester and there are loadsa places to have a nice day out

Take him to Formby, better than Southport IMO.

Dogs of the 4 leg kind are not allowed on the beach until the end of September. If you get stopped by one of the beach patrol you will incur a heavy fine.:-(

Susanemily - where did you get that information from? Do you have any websites you can refer me to?

Who would enforce this anyway?

From the signs on the beach.
Also my husband made the mistake of taking Sam on the beach before the end of September last year.
He got away with it because he said the dog couldnt read.(I think it was because it was after 7.30pm at night myself)
Also if any of you come here for a day out with children. Be aware that Southport hospital do not treat children.
God forbid that your kiddy needs help, you would have to go to Ormskirk.
A very busy road from Southport at the best of time.
Sorry NatD, it should have the rules and regs on the Sefton web site.

same in blackpool as well

It is enforced by the beach rangers. Surprisingly enough, employed by Sefton.

Formby beach, I do not know about.
To get to it you have to go through the nature reserve. That is run by the national trust.

Can you not have fun in this country anymore lol???

Cheers everyone!

Just in case anyone is interested, I have spoken to Sefton Tourism (sad I know lol!) but they have advised that as long as you are 200m away from the entrance at both Formby and Ainsdale, this are designated childrens areas, then Dogs are fine off the leads in any other area.

As far as i recall from when i was there last; dogs need to be on a lead in the national trust woodland area by formby (the place with the red squirrels).
