Becoming tired of damaged DVDs in the post

*This turned into a long one, sorry for the rant!*

Earlier today I received my 28 weeks/days later box set in the post. I saw it in-store in ASDA for £9.99 last week and thought it was a good price. Instinctively, though, I went straight onto find-dvd.co.uk on my mobile phone and saw it for £7.99 though Zavvi. An almost guaranteed cheaper price plus the possibility of Quidco cash-back through some sites has always swayed me towards buying from the net in preference. I don't mind the waiting time as I have DVDs for weeks anyway before getting round to watching them and I have accounts set up all the major on-line media retailers. I also rarely get a chance to go to high-street retail outlets other than ASDA.

Well the package arrived from Zavii today: damaged. The outer box was was a bit crumpled at the bottom and I thought "shame, but not a ruiner". Then I heard rattling and when I took one of the DVDs out the bottom of the case was shattered. This happened to me very recently with Play.com, too: a TV series I'd ordered for a friend arrived with similar damage. They were both sent in bubble envelopes and no other padding. At least HMV send theirs in a cardboard box and I've yet to receive a damaged DVD from them.

It doesn't seem worth the hassle to return the items and I'm close to quitting this Internet ordering malarky, unless it's from HMV.co.uk, who usually have close to the best price on more popular items. I've been a Play customer for years with over 50 orders under my belt (almost used to use them exclusively before discovering HMV.com and find-dvd.co.uk) but I think this is inexcusable. The Royal Mail are partly to blame but everyone knows how bad they can be. When purchasing an item my contract is with the retailer and I expect them to package the item appropriately.

Anyone else share my frustrations?

Blame the design of the cases for rattlers.

In total, I've received around 5 media items badly damaged in the post and around over double that with creases/scratches etc. Total orders must go well over 200 though with a combination of CDs and DVDs and then Christmas/Birthday presents for others.

There's no love lost between myself and the Royal Mail but there's no argument in my mind that HMV package their items better and that Play.com and others could learn from this if they want to avoid this happening to customers. I'm sure Virgin used to use better packaging, too, before they became Zavvi.

Just give them a ring and they will replace the damged item for you seems silly to waste the money

It's definitely an inconvenience to me. I don't have a post office that close to me, especially not within working hours. There's creating the RMA, waiting for a reply while all the while you can't watch the DVDs, wrapping the item up again (though usually the original warring can be used, but not in this case as it was torn in transit) and printing off the postage label before going off to the PO and waiting in the huge lunch-time queue followed by yet more waiting for the replacement item to arrive. A lot of the time I've had to chase up for postage cost refunds with companies, too.

I'm annoyed and it's my prerogative to have a rant - stop posting rational replies :p

I didn't no it was possible to receive a package without a loose disk.
Got a CD from HMV, box was to big for it, so it had got loose and the disk was scratched up and the case was cracked. They'd replace the case straight away, but if i wanted a new disk I'd have to send it back, I couldn't be bothered so I just downloaded it. And got a replacement case sent out.

When i wanted a replacement case for tiger woods 2007 360 game they said id have to send it all back despite it actually arriving opened ina black case

I RECIEVED A CRACKED CASE DVD FROM ASDA, I WAS VERY ANNOYED SO I EMAILED THEM AND I GOT 10% OFF MY NEXT ORDER. I TOLD THEM THAT THEY HAD LOST A CUSTOMER, AND THEY HAVE.
EVEN WITH A 10% DISCOUNT I WOULD NOT ORDER A DVD FROM THEM AGAIN.
EMAIL AND COMPLAIN, THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET THINGS CHANGED.
AS CUSTOMERS, WE HAVE THE POWER TO WITHDRAW OUR CUSTOM.
PITY WE CAN'T DO THE SAME WITH ROYAL MAIL!!!:whistling:

Not had a smashed disc, but always loose.

Also had a box with no game in it, and play.com refused to send a new one out - said it was manufacturers fault (who said it was plays fault....)

Well your contract (for want of a better term) was with Play so there fault!

I ordered a 360 game of woolworths before Christmas, which didnt arrive, good customer service.
A CD and DVD selection off Amazon, which didnt arrive, sent out a new one and as the CD was out of stock upgraded it to the CD & DVD set (£3 more) free of charge, good customer service.
A DVD set off BlahDVD, which didnt arrive, sent me a new one all good, then sent me a e-mail saying as my 1st order got lost they couldnt ship to me anymore :x

Me thinks somewhere in the chain someone is having my goods away...
All replacements were shipped to my work address which is now where all my non-couried orders get sent to
