easiest thing is to measure it up and just go to homebase or B&Q and get some cheapo wood cut to size

Ikea do some very cheaply!

You cant just by any old timber it will have to much give I would have thought they should be Beachwood

best thing would be a single sheet of thin plywood to spread the weight over the slats, they may tend to curve.

You need the gaps for air so the matress can breath, that would defeat the object ;-)

Thanks for replying guys... I'll check out a timbers yard next week.. What wood should it be, Pine, beachwood?? What should I expect to pay for something like 10 slats?

Why not just put some hardboard over it and drill a few holes in it?
Many beds these days have a solid base, (although from the aobve it seems these may not be too good for the matress?)
I wouldn't fork out on 'decent' wood though, as I don't think the 'delection' will be an issue. The wood slats will be supported every 6.5" by the metal poles, so maybe if you put the slat on, then stood on one right between the metal bars you might break it, but this is going to have a matress on the top!

I ended up getting 4 planks of 6mm Mdf and drilled loads of holes init. Placed an old bedsheet ontop of the bed first to stop any banging and another ontop of the wood, then placed my matress ontop. Does the job nicely! Cheers everyone for your input.
