Twidroid for Twitter
Handcent SMS is a must
Facebook
BBC News
Layar is very cool
My Tracks for Google Maps is ace. It can track you via GPS and then you can upload the track to Google Docs and it shows the track on Google Maps and also creates a spreadsheet showing distance travelled, max speed, average speed etc. Great if you like running, walking etc

Some of my favourites are

Wavesecure......a remote phone location and locking system. This was in beta for Android and so was free. I can't be sure what the current status is but it's worth checking out.
AppManager......an App manager. Good for loading applications from sources other than Android Market.
Arity.....A calculator app
Google Skymap.....for amateur astronomers. Very good for showing off the sensors.
GPS Status...combined GPS and compass app.
WifiScan......Uses the WiFi to scan for local access points and uses the GPS to generate a KML (google earth) file. Import this into GE to generate a map of the AP locations.

I'll be interested in other peoples recommendations. Enjoy your Hero.

Why?

I find it a LOT better than the in-built Hero SMS system. It's all personal choice though I suppose

I'm very impressed with the phone so far.

Is there a (free) 'sat nav' app?

Advanced App Killer is good too. It kills off apps running in the background that use up memory

Here's a good trick I learnt - do you find the typing sluggish? If you switch off the "vibrate" option (it sort of buzzes quickly every time you hit a letter) then the typing becomes lightning fast

I installed this a while ago. swapping to a S African sim locked the phone and sent the email. It didn't take much to get the phone working again. So not really impressed.

Errrm wasnt that proof it works then?

I use copilot as a sat nav,
taskkiller for killing background apps
beebplayer (iplayer app)
Astro filemanager
Autospeaker (automatically activates loudspeaker during a call if you lay the phone flat)
Flashlight (exactly what it says)
Ringdroid (snip tracks down to ringtones, also allows custom message and alarm tones)

As in the same way any thief could bypass it??

I'd be inclined to say no.

Sorry I read that as it worked by locking it, but was easy to unlock it again by using the wavesecure online:oops:

Defeats the whole point!

Android is for those who prefer something other and superior to an iPhone

i have a nexus 1 at the mo and no way is it superior to the iphone its good and it will get better but its nowhere near as polished as the iphone ui but in time it will be

I'm waiting for Android 2.1 to be released, its supposed to be a large improvement (on to me an already good OS)

I've only had the phone 2 days. Is it worthwhile rooting? Got any links on how to do it?

Loads of good apps, and nearly all free. Maybe not as polished as the iphone ones generally.
I think the Hero is a great phone. Would recommend getting a screen protector though.

No, I couldn't get online, that was the reason for the SA sim. I forget exactly what I did but it was simple enough after 2 or 3 attempts and 5 minutes.

Most of my faves were listed, but I would add (I may have missed others listing these !):

WordUp! (addictive game), Guardian Unlimited (downloads news stories overnight for offline viewing), ShopSavvy (scan a barcode instore and you get web prices and local prices), Jewellust (slick iPhone esque graphics puzzle game).
