1. Go to Google

2. Search for AVG or Avast!

3. Never pay for anti-virus software again

4. Thank me

Another vote here for Avast! - totally free AV solution which

1. Works

and

2. Doesn't take over your entire PC.
#3

#4
Avast is a defo...AVG has issues
#5

Used Avast for 5 years now and no security problems YET !
Runs seamlessly and take up little recourses.

£0 (But you can donate)

AVG for me:-D

http://free.avg.com/

also have Ad-Aware, which was free too
#11
Have switched to Avast when my PC got infected while having AVG installed last month
it allowed a trojan onto my computer!

I prefer the look of AVG but Avast works better so had to swap.

Kaspersky consistently gets the best reviews so go for Steganos, which is exactly the same but cheaper and sold under a different name! http://www.steganos.com/en/products/virus-free/antivirus/overview/

Nod 32 works the best..
#14
NOD32 every time. you pay for it, but its so good you don't even know its there till it picks something up

i used to swear by symantec antivirus (corporate), but recently it's baan a real PITA. but NOD32 just carries on without impacting system performance...

download avast and give some money to charity.

I use Nod32 but there is nothing wrong with Avast.

Another vote for Avast from me. Not the prettiest but works, is free and doesn't hog the system.

Be careful when you search for 'free anti-virus'. Better to use a reputable site like download.com.

Check to see if your internet provider provides this 'free of charge' e.g. BT Broadband gives you Mcafee as part of your subscription benefits.

You are honestly being given good advice mum2b although I kind of understand what you are writing.

In the last year I have taken Norton and McAffee off about 6 friends laptops and PC's in favour of Avast basically because not only do they cause major slowdown and system problems they are also overly expensive.

Your choice of course but that £20 would be much more wisely spent. :)

While your at it download and install CCleaner and Adware two more FREE excellent programmes to keep your system clean and free of nasties.

Disagree with hotto there - you feel secure because you're paying £20+ to 'Norton' for anti-virus every year. The word 'sucker' springs to mind, you being ripped off but if throwing away money makes you happy...

The 'understanding what you are writing' bit, paying for a false sense of security is madness!

lol well I always try to be the diplomat but of course you are correct.

You'd be surprised though at how many people think that free = rubbish.

People also get frightened by the scaremongering that goes on as well as the marketing tactics of the "big boys".
Personally I'd rather have nothing and take my chances than have Norton on my PC.

Enough ranting from me, you take care Jah :)

You too, and no offence to OP - but don't go paying Norton (or McAfee for that matter) for what is frankly rubbish software. Free != rubbish, I'm a bit of an open-source freak but there are so many good reasons behind it!

I prefer kapersky if paid
#32
Avast all the way...... by far the best free one out there....... min expires 2016 - so quite a while till I have to obtain a new license.
