Another vote for Johnny Cash and hurt, although he's done many more excellent covers on his "American" albums.
Nirvana - seasons in the sun. My funeral song.
Metallica - Whisky in the jar.
Sisters of mercy - Emily Probably not everyones cup of tea but reminds me of being a angst ridden teenager,
Butthole surfers - Hurdy gurdy man. As above but stoned.

"I'll say that this is without question the best cover of this song I've ever heard. That being said, anyone who claims this is better than Black Sabbath's original 1970 recording deserves to be sodomized with an ice auger."

Dolly Parton : Stairway to Heaven

Nah, Rolf Harris - Stairway To heaven, takes the pisch in a way that it needs to be taken - more rhythmic, features Miss Given, and has a cracking Didgeridoo solo.

Can't argue with Hendrix- Watchtower though, sublime
