Best encryption software for hard drives?

Having recently just purchased the new my book with encryption software integrated, i wondered if it was possible to use the WD software for my old 1 tb my book. If not what would be the best software to use for password protecting external hard drives? I don't want software to have to be installed on each computer when plugging in the drive. Truecrypt is the only one i know of, but are there better professional peices of software?

Thanks in advance

Would it be quicker to encrypt it without any data on it? I've heard it can take upto 8 hours or so... would it also need to be installed on other computers before attaching the external hard drive?

Thanks in advance

[FONT=Verdana]You can either encrypt the entire hard drive (you'll need to install the software onto the computer/s you use) or you can create an encrypted container file, which you can mount via TrueCrypt as a local drive on your computer; the latter is what I do, as you can run TrueCrypt off of the same physical drive where the encrypted container file resides on.

Edit - If you encrypt the entire hard drive then you'll need to move all of the data off of it, as it will get wiped off from what I can remember.

Truecrypt is better when there is less data to encrypt...

For an 80gb HDD it roughly takes 90mins to 2 hours whenever I do it.

Also, it's handy to have daemon tools installed so you can create the ISO rescue disk and leave it backed up in other places (saves on CDs until needed).

Nah, it leaves data in place. Just takes longer.

Eek, that's a fair while. What's the on-the-fly encryption like? I ask, because I've just copied 800GB of data from one drive to another, with one of the drives due to be my new backup drive. Quicker to copy from one to another again, than encrypt what's already on the drive?

Grr after 8 hours i get this error message from truecrypt : "Error: Cannot mount volume. The host file/device is already in use. Attempt to mount without exclusive access failed as well."

[FONT=Verdana]It maybe your anti-virus software is attempting to scan the external USB hard drive, either as a scheduled job or it's picking up the changes being made.

You might want to temporarily disconnect from the internet along with temporarily disabling your anti-virus software (assume you've done a full scan already?) before kicking off a second attempt.

BTW have you also checked out the TrueCrypt forums as well?
