Hi all, my free mcaffe security centre subscription has just run out, so I need to get a new free anti virus and firewall. I used to have AVG and Zone Alarm prior to mcaffee.

What's everyones thoughts on the best free anti virus and firewall? Are AVG and zone alarm still good? Are there better free ones now? Any help would be muchly appreciated. Thanks!

I bang on about this everytime someone asks about AV but....
Barclays customers get Kaspersky Internet Security absolutely free, which is an amazing deal.

I love Avast, it's free and very unintrusive

Thanks, I'm not with barclays and not really interested in opening up a new bank account/credit card. But will bear this in mind for the future.

AVG or Avast + Windows firewall should do the job. If you're wireless, your router will also have built in firewall.

Try Download .com. They Seem To Have Most Internet Security Norton Etc,
Most On Free Trial. Not Bad If Getting Free Trials.

I hate AVG! It took menearly 4 hours to do a scheduled scan, which used 40% of the CPU. I recommend Avast, but for some reason it caused my trackpad to freeze so I begrudgingly uninstalled it.

And common sense. I haven't gotten a single virus in my life and I'm not exactly a saint when it comes to browsing the web!:whistling:

AVG is at 8.5 now, and is far from the worst. Yes, it sucks waiting for a virus scan - Thats why I run one then flick onto the Xbox or something, I would expect it to take up a fair bit of memory when scanning.

fair enough - avg is maybe not the worst but it sucks big time at finding viruses

The truth about AVG:

AVG detection rate only 82% this is very poor.
AVG stands for Anti Virus Guard however AVG does not guard
AVG fails a simple virus test namely this one:
http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_fil…
AVG 8 eats memory this will slow down your PC.
AVG is well known for missing viruses because of it poor detection rate.

is avg free the best antivirus software to have on my computer at home? NO

Both Free Avast or Free Avira are better, if you look at detection rates Free Avast 86%, Free Avira over 94%, both free Avast & Free Avira guard, both free Avast & Free Avira pass the virus test, both free Avast & Free Avira use less memory than AVG.

Ok, thanks very much everyone, think I will go for Avast (why do I keep wanting to say 'me harties' in a deep pirate accent after that?!) and make use of my vista firewall. Thanks for all your input!

Good choice. If you have a synaptics touchpad driver, best of luck to you!
