there are no best av software out there. every av kit has people who say they love it and others who say they hate it.

personally, id say you go with mcafee. its easy to use and customize, has many features depending on what you are after. it will keep you safe.

Avast or Antivir take your pick

recently installed avast, on advice from misc, very happy so far.

There is no "best" as they all do different jobs differently

The most rounded program and suited for home users that have little technical knowledge is avast.

It checks every web page you visit to see if there are any nasties behind it. It warns you what it has found and lets you terminate the connection to the site.
It also does root scanning of your pc when you reboot it. This means it can search for areas that other av software doesnt. It runs silently in your task bar and is smaller than other av software.

AVG used to be my #1 but lately it has become bloated, less clear searching. (couldn't find stuff avast did). Some people sing the praises of avg but it goes down to your technical knowledge.

NO av software is perfect, don't rely on them as they can only be upto date after the virus has been found and a fix found for it. The best line of protecting your pc is yourself. Be vigilant on the internet and you're less likely to get a virus.

Also get a firewall such as comodo, which can stop nasties from getting into your pc, unless you download them

Unfortunately not but you can turn it off if you want.

ooo so has avast outperformed AVG nowadays? Might be time for a change if so.

you get what you pay for, pay nothing-get limited service and you'll need to use 3-4 progs to do the same thing as one internet security suite.
more ram and system resources used.

Eset Smart security for me. used for 2 years straight with no problems. my pc is on 24/7

Avast. Had the free version for 8 years on all my pc's, never had a virus.

Avast... beat... everything? Even Eset's software?

Avast antivirus is the best available. Hands down.

Avast premium, not the free version.
you get what you pay for.

so many people say "well I've used XX for years and never had a problem"
so what
I've used Eset for years and never had a problem either.

choices are out there, use a free limited protection one, or pay for a full premium one.
choices are yours.

but it seems that if you DON'T use the free ones, you'll be called all sorts on here.
they're free for a reason.
in the hope that you'll like it enough and buy the full version.

businesses need to make money to fund research.
if they fund the research with a premium security thats paid for, then it must offer something that the free one doesnt.
stands to reason.
