AVG free edition all the way.

there's no need to pay money for good protection. i've used AVG free for atleast 5 years and never had any problems. I've also had PC-cillin and McAfee and those two were worse as they messed up other apps and had larger memory footprints. it also performs as well as anti virus software you have to pay for, such as Norton - i'm not just making it up, it's ranked up there with them in many reputable PC magazines.

Oh, and also, a decent free firewall is Comodo. Even the GUI looks professional (which you don't always get with free software), and it one of the best in leak tests etc.

AVG also lets you know when you need to update it, and is easy to do so with just a click of a button!

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall.

One of the most popular free firewalls on the web, ZoneAlarm's comes with mixed user feedback. That said, it's easy to install and use, and has a long history to back it up.

i also recommend you download sand boxie. if you are planning to visit sites you aren't sure about then you can just load your browser in the sand box and harmful files are unable to corrupt your OS or save themselves to your hard drive. you can even run programs that you have downloaded within the sand box and, if they turn out to be malicious, they won't harm your PC.

make sure you are only running one firewall and one anti-virus. if you have multiple of either running it could crash your pc etc. also, a fresh install of your existing firewall may clear it up, not sure why a firewall would specifically crash your PC. maybe just try and new one like comodo or zonealarm

I did use the free version of AVG but it crashed my laptop to the point where I had to resort to the recovery disc which worked but meant I lost all my installed progs - not good news - the reason for the crash was found to be a conflict between AVG and a pre-installed av prog on the laptop which wasn't even running - since this I have steered well clear of AVG.

Zone Alarm is a solid, trustworthy firewall - used it for years - you have to go through a few screens to get to the free edition but stick with it cos it's well worth it.

Avast works very well with Zone Alarm and they make a great team. I also fully endorse morris7's comments on sandboxie - free prog and a great resource.

Just why does this question get asked on practically a daily basis? maybe it should be a sticky.

I used Avast until I did some research which stated Avast only could find 73% of viruses!

AVG found 94%

kaspersky found 96%

Avira found 95%

I went for Avira as its free replacing avast. AVIRA found 2 trojans in exe files that AVG and Avast had filed to find.
