Best HTPC / Media Software & Remote?

I am thinking of using my current PC as a HTPC / Media Centre. PC is pretty well specced, and running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

What is the best software to use? I know there is Windows media centre, but i'm sure there must be better ones out there.

Can anyone recommend a good remote? It will need to be operated between 5-10 ft away, and I assume would need some sort of analog stick for moving the cursor.

Thanks.

I'd stay with W7 Ultimate personally as it comes with the Media centre component as standard.

An official MCE remote would be the best in my experience.

I use media portal on Win7 - it's open source www.team-mediaportal.com

For a remote I use a Logitech diNovo Mini http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/3848&cl=us,en

There are plenty of vids on youtube of the media portal software in action - the best skin seems to be the streamed MP skin - thats what I liked the best anyway & there are youtube vids showing that skin too.
