agree. I stayed near there at santa sussana, any of those resorts along costa brava are cheap, have a beach and not too touristy as most go to the likes of benidorm etc. only a £5 train ride from barcelona as well, less than £300 for 2 in sept 2010 half board, using easyjet flights and booking hotel seperately. perfect for a relaxing break by the pool, bit of shopping on street markets, sightseeing in barcelona etc.
Tossa's not really in the south though, is it?
Granada is well worth visiting as well as the villages in the lecrin valley.
Also depending on the time of year and the weather you can ski (or snowboard) in the morning and spend the afternoon on the beach which from personal experience is pretty awesome. :)
It's a shame it costs so much to get there now. Since ryan air stopped going from my local airport and the costs of taking my snowboard or bike has gone through the roof in recent years has limited my ongoing adventure of the part of the country.
If heading into the wilderness learning just a little bit of Spanish goes a whole long way.

OP said non-touristy. Nerja is packed with English.
Rincon del la Victoria near Malaga is pretty decent and very quiet.
