i want to upgrade my kids ancient computer a little, they play the sims/sims 2, tycoon, those sorts of games

It has a GeForce 2 MX400 64mb in it at the mo and looking for something a little better
#3
How much you want to spend roughly mate?

Whats the RAM like also? Sims 2 needs some power to keep it going. Looking at upgrades you may just look at MikeT's deals and see what can be sorted from Dell. He has some awesome deals, and sometimes updating an old computer can become a loss compared to buying a new one..

its going to have 512 in it it, the games run now but very poorly on 256, i cannot afford a new computer i cant really afford to upgrade this one as something else has come out, but promised them i would try and upgrade it a few weeks ago before the summat else popped up

its ok looking at these deals, yes theres loads but when you naff all about computers it becomes a little more difficult to know whats good and what isnt, yes they maybe all great but run no better than what we have

Fair enough.
Well I'd recommend getting a card with 128mb since it'll run sims on low settings a roller coast tycoon pretty well.

ebay search link to FX 5200 apg:

Amazon.co.uk -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-nVidia-Silent-Cooling-Graphics/dp/B000093LU0

Think that would play them a treat. When my bro gets home from school I will ask what his is, and PM or reply to this post if I don't forget. Its an old nVidia one which runs Sims 2, COD 2, NFS Series fine on 512mb RAM and 2.8ghz processor.

Hope those links are of some use.

thanks james, the links to be honest i had already found, its just i dont know whats best, and as strapped for cash ant to get the best of a bad lot, if you get what i mean:oops:

I did start this thread http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105142 about building my own (thats before the damp problem needed sorting) and on there was advised maybe to upgrade till i was able to afford something decent, but like i said knowing naff all doesnt help

ah :) I had a similar problem when I upgraded my graphics card. Was 2 years ago, I ended up buying a Sapphire Radeon x800 GTO2 256mb. Problem with techonlogy its too expensive to keep up with.

I think nVidia are better for budget quality graphics card, but others may think different.

ATI Radeon 8500 64mb - £10 + delivery

On a rough scale -

GeForce mx440 = rubbish that doesn't work with many things anymore (is based on 7 year old technology)
nVidia 5200 = Works with more stuff than 440 and is around double the speed
Ati 8500 = About double the speed of the 5200, although still doesn't work with everything
ATi 9800 Pro = DirectX9 support and works with most games out today, and is about twice as fast as the 8500
ATi 9800 XT = Ditto the 9800Pro, but about 10% faster

So, the 9800 XT's the one to go for, if you can stump up the money. I'd value it at around £20 today, since, although it was around £300 when it came out, four years progress has done bad things to its value.

yes this is the one i keep hearing to get, i can possibly afford £20 at a stretch, but the only place i can find them is ebay and not to sure about buying something like this from there, also do i remove old one and put that in its place, sorry dumb question i know, i have only ever put memory into a computer and added some USB/firewire slot type card thingie ma jig

same as above 9800XT can be had for cheap now and should run sims fine its not worth getting the others

about time, been waiting for you to come online all moring so i could pm you about this, it would have saved me this embaressing thread  No-ones ever around whens ya need them

The FX5200 is pretty much an MX440 with shader model 3 support, the difference in performance is minimal at best besides, neither of them were any good when they were new, never mind now.

The 9800's are leagues ahead of the others you're looking at but even so it may be worth trying to pick up a second hand ATI X800 from eBay if you can stretch to it (probably around £25 + delivery I'd have thought), that'll blow away anything else mentioned thus far performance wise.

Oh no dont add anymore, its frying my head

To simplify it, the 9800's / X800's in any form (Pro / XT / etc.) will give a massive performance boost. The others aren't worth the money, I gave away an old FX5200 the other week, they're just not worth anything now.

Try searching for "9800" or "X800" on eBay.co.uk

Had an Nvidia 5200.....dreadful card and would not recommend!

As others have said a radeon 9800 or X800 is the way to go if you can afford it.

edit:

tell you what Sassie.......I have 2 graphics cards here that we no longer use(upgraded pc's earlier this year).
Radeon 9550 and a Radeon 9600xt.....the 9550 I had in my pc and I play sims 2 and it was fine, the 9600 was in my OH's pc,it is the better card but got more use because he plays the FPS type games like Quake etc.

I have no idea what they are worth so make me an offer, they are not doing anything just sat in boxes!
#18
sassie i dont suppose u use AV FORUMS do you?

they have dedicated sections for pcs and components

if u put up a wanted AD with your budget theres bound to be many replies

id recommend a 6600gt as a good card on a budget they are better than the 9800's:-D

x800 might be over your budget but give av forum a try if u need a gfx card

How come they're a better choice? The 6600GT's perform slightly better than the 9800 Pros, but can't touch the 9800XT's.

im getting so confused now :-( :-( am i looking for the 128 or 256?

For your purposes it doesn't really matter. More is better obviously, but I doubt you'll notice any difference in those games you mentioned.

do a google search

newer tech, faster core and clock speeds

6600GT @ stock speeds (500/900)= around 3400 3dmark 05
9800XT @ stock speeds (412/760)= around 2800 3dmark05 marks

dont quote me on that but its just a rough example done with a quick google

the 6600gt did come out after the 9800XT so it was refined to be a 9800 killer

Sas, these are worth a look, they're a lot better than what you have not as good as the 9800's/X800's/6600GT's, but they are sufficiently better than what you have and will save you a few £ over the 9800's etc.......

right i will go look through ebay now for the 9800xt 128 or 256 and see whats going :santa:

K, I thought the XT won out at higher resolutions due to the 256bit mem Vs the 128bit of the 6600's and it streaked ahead with things like FSAA and anisotropic filtering on. Although thinking about it the 6600 does support SM3 so you're probably right about it being a better choice if they're the same ££ and if Sims 2 uses SM3 (never played it so I don't know)?

No problemo:)

As I said, they are just sitting here doing nowt.I don't do ebay so they will carry on sitting here doing nowt!!:p

I have the cd with the drivers on with the 9550,but no cd for the 9600....though you should be able to download the latest drivers anyway.

Say £12 delivered???? for either one

Would that be reasonable folks?

I'd say you should be having your arm snapped off at that . I think about that plus delivery is what you'd be looking at on eBay so it sounds like a good deal for someone......

EDIT: the 9600 would be the better choice, you can always download the latest drivers from here: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html which is something you should always do regardless of what drivers come with a card to make sure you're up to date.
