Best old(ish) PC games?

Yep, I'm looking for some long lost PC gems I missed out on in years gone by. :) My current shitty PC can't handle anything recent, it even struggles with C&C: Generals at anything higher than 10xx by 7xx.

I love RTS games, my entire PC game collection is pretty much made up of C&C titles. Never tried any FPS type games on my PC since I'd imagine using a keyboard+mouse would make it rather difficult.

Hitman: Codename 47 is the only name on my mind right now, simply because I enjoyed playing Hitman 2 on my PS2. Still have to get around to playing Contracts and Blood Money, kinda got bored after beating every Hitman 2 mission with highest rating!

Grim Fandango is a little played Gem

I used to like a game called ROCKET JOCKEY think it was created by lavasoft or something similar, and that would only play on windows 95.

I've tried downloading it a few times, but can never get it to run on XP.
#4
The original Grand Theft Autos with the top down view are the best

Forgot to add - My favourite genre is RPGs.

I think the Elder Scroll series are RPGs, right? I was going to get Oblivion (Elder Scrolls IV??) until my E520 dream turned into a nightmare...

Use the XP compatibility wizard and set it to run on windows 95 (98 will probably work to)

It's an RPG alright LOL The world is absolutely enormous LOL
I have the 'Game of the Year' edition with all the expansion packs. It's so cheap on eBay, I payed a fiver if I remember rightly. An absolute steal at that price.

Theres an old RPG text based game called Sleuth that I absolutley loved!

Unforunatley it doesnt seem to be around anymore as it used to be on those HUGE floppy discs. If you chance across it let me know - that game was ace!

System Shock 2
Total Annhilation
Age of Empires
Deus Ex

As much as I appreciate the links to the the game download websites, I think people are getting slightly confused by my use of the word "old".

My computer can most likely play most games that came out between 2003-2004, just not at high settings. I was looking more for 3-5 year old games that are a little outdated...not really SNES-PS1 games. :giggle:

Anyway, Final Fantasy - Endless Nova (some fan made game from 2002) looks worth downloading for free. I hope it plays better than the emulated version of Golden Sun I tried a couple of years back...

Baldur's Gate.

Soon to be another sequel to this.

There's two other oldish games I've been looking at Warcraft 3 and Mafia. Are they any good?

Now we're talking, a suggestion AND link to the best deal available!

2 highly rated games + 2 expansion packs for £8.99 is hard to resist. Without sounding too lazy, what's the gameplay/battle system like?
#19
If you like shoot'em ups, I rather enjoyed Incoming.

All the C+C's
Total Annihilation + the expansion packs - as good as the C+C's!
Quake Arena
Unreal Tournament

Use www.find-games.co.uk for the cheapest price, they're all cheap as chips.

http://gunz.ijji.com/

I highly recommend this. A real FULL FREE game. No cost whatsoever. A real 3D game, nice graphics without the need for a high end machine. AMazing gameplay, very quick, even better that its free.

Keep the suggestions coming, I'll look over them all tomorrow when I'm more awake. :)

Ordered the Baldur's Gate collection. Not sure what to expect from the series, never read up about any of them before, but I'm sure they have to be pretty decent games to receive the ratings they have.

I own nearly all the C&C games. I'm missing the Red Alert expansions (my PS1 discs have gone AWOL...) and want the PC version of the original C&C...that's it. Don't want to buy the TFD collection to get them since it's meant to have lots of bugs.

Used find-DVD/games for ages. It's a little annoying you can't limit your search to certain consoles and prices, doing so would make the site even more useful.

Great Stuff, I love the C+C's.

I've never played Baldurs Gate, but when I used to read PCGamer, I'm sure it scored over 90%!

Unreal Tournament and Quake Arena Scored about 95% which I believe is one of the highest scores I've seen. Well worth checking out.

Also register for gunz. Takes 2 secs, play straight away but be warned, its quite quick-paced so if you havnt played similar games, it will be kinda tough to begin with.

Worms is a classic.

I'll register/download gunz later on today, can't hurt to have a look. Is it an offline or online game?

After doing some research, Elder Scrolls III looks like a good game to play in the place of the newer Elder Scrolls IV. I'm kinda worried about if my system can handle it since it was talked about in 2002 like Oblivion is today - You needed a good system to play it back then. RAM is my main worry...only have 512MB. :whistling:
#24
I'd recommend Monopoly Tycoon:)

Having a hard time deciding if you're having a dig at my age or computer here.

Oh well, always liked playing monopoly when I was kid...many, many years ago now.

OMG Dungeon Keeper - soooo much imp slapping! loved it!

Gunz is an online game. 512MB should handle it well.

Theme Hospital - Classic
Rollercoaster Tycoon

Grand Theft Auto - Criminal Activity Simulator :w00t:

And more....

King of Chicago - Mafia Simulator

Elder Scrolls III Min specs-

98/ME 128mb RAM
XP/2k 256mb RAM
500MHz P3, Celeron or AMD
8x CD/DVD Drive
1gb HDD space
DX8.1
32mb D3D compatible video card

This will run on any reasonably equipped PC from 2002 onwards I think. Hundreds of hours of gameplay awaits :)
To be safe, double thoses specs for good gameplay
#31
Is it free Scribbles?
#32
No, not free. Just a very good older game.
#33
unreal tournament series

I've ordered the Baldur Gate collection, Warcraft 3 + EP and Starcraft + EP so far.

Yeah, looks like it should run fine. Thanks. :)

Does the GOTY edition include both expansion packs? I'm getting confused over which version to get, was going to get this version as part of a 3 for £9 deal until reading about the expansion packs.

Btw, can anyone tell me what RAM I should add into my old piece of junk? I think that's the main thing holding back game performance...

Here's part of what PC Wizard 2007 tells me:

Type : DDR-SDRAM PC-2700 (166 MHz) - [DDR-333]
Size : 512 MB (2 rows, 4 banks)

Lol the funny thing about that is you have a Avatar from a PS1 game, you must like Grandia and Justin
#36
Heroes of Might and Magic is worth a play. Can buy the set for next to nothing on ebay. Or pick up 2 in gamestation for 99p bogof. 3/5 are the best though. 3 is a sold out title so very cheap, and 5 is reasonably recent.

Note to self: Remove avatar before asking for the best old(ish) PC games. :p

Heh, Grandia is in my top 5 games. I love my PS1 RPGs... I'd buy the PC versions of FFVII and FFVIII if they were still around.

The games on the two websites the chaps on the other page linked to didn't actually include many (if any) PS1 games, certainly no PS1 RPGs. The FF and BoF fan made games made with RPG Maker 2000 ldo look pretty good, but they're just games made for fun by gamers.
