Best online DVD/Game Rental Company?

I am considering entering the online world of DVD and videogame rental as I have no blockbuster or the like within a convenient distance and my DVD and xbox 360 collection is beginning to get rather stale.

I was considering LoveFilm but having looked online they seem to be slated for never sending out your high priority choices and being extremely difficult to leave so I'm not very keen on joining them. Anyones experiences and recommendations on any other sites would be extremely welcome

Thanks

I've just spent 7 months as a member of LoveFilm. The priority lists are a red herring as they are not considered when your next discs are sent. Its a case of pick-n-mix...you select titles that you are interested in and then they pick at random. If you're hoping to use it for new releases then you may be bitterly disappointed coz it doesnt work that way. IMO you're better off paying a few quid here and there to hire out of a shop or download for viewing (xbox360 movie marketplace for example). If its games, same again, you;re better of renting from a shop so you get what your after.

Besides, I was paying £14.99 for 2 disc unlimited per month. But in reality you can only get around 8 discs, less if its games and you play them a lot. Say you post it back on Monday, they get it Tuesday, dispatch Tuesday, you get Wednesday, this leaves you a few days to watch DVDs or play games. This is best case scenario.

Leaving them was pretty easy, just remember to send any discs back and cancel your membership online at least 7 days prior to your end date and send the discs back recorded delivery. If they dont receive the discs back by the end date they will charge you for another month. A sneaky little thing that they couldnt do with me as my card had expired by the end date.

If on the other hand your not too fussed about what you receive and when you receive it/send it back then it can be quite a useful thing.

Just wasnt what I was after though.

Also be wary of Free Trials, I signed up on a 3 month free trial but then decided to change my package while I was online. My 3 months trial was cancelled and they immediately charged my card for the current month the package I had selected.

I had the 2 disc combo package for DVDs and Games. Be aware that if you have mixed dvds and games in your list then you are not guaranteed to get 1 game and 1 dvd every time, they may send you 2 games, or 2 dvds.

cheers steven. Your complaint is exactly what has been aired by hundreds of people all across the net. How you have prioritised your list makes no difference to what is actually sent out. Is it possible to get round this by only making list with say 5 films/games on it so at least whatever they send will be something you definitely want to watch/play?

Is there no other rental company that isn't owned by LoveFilm that people can recommend? Its annoying because the shop I live above used to be a rental shop until about a month before I moved in!!!!! :-(

You can get round it by simply choosing the titles you want and only putting them on your list, say if its 2 games then only put the 2 games on your list, (keep a separate note of all the other titles you want on a word document or spreadsheet or something). The risk there is that if the 2 discs you only have in your list are not available then you wont receive anything and would be paying money for nothing.

I scouted about on the net for other rental places but they are all pretty much the same and as you say, most are 3rd party fronts for LoveFilm.

I have a 3 month free trail LoveFilm voucher sitting next to me. If (IF!!!) I sign-up with it, and for example choose their '3 discs at a time, Unlimited DVDs & Game' for £18.99 a month would I definitely get this deal for 3 months or would I have a limited amount of rentals as it is a trial offer? And finally, if I find they are pants can I cancel at any time during the 3 months?

Cheers everyone!!! :) If you keep me happy on xbox live i'll have less of a reason to post inane threads like this on here! :)

EDIT: Thanks for the help Steven, just noticed your thread above

yes you can cancel at anytime in the 3 months, the £18.99 is the unlimited amount of dvd and game rentals.

If your voucher is specifically for a package then thats the package that you get free for 3 months. If you then selected a different package, chances are that you will lose the free trial and get charged straight away like I did.

Yes, you can cancel anytime within the 3 months. Make sure that you have returned all the discs and get proof of postage for the last ones you send back. Also make sure that you cancel their direct debit if they set one up, and also cancel your membership online as well and keep a note of it.

I know this thread is kind of over but I thought I'd post a little advice for how to make Lovefilm work for you a bit better.

If you go for a multi disc rental deal and want to rent games and DVDs there is a little trick to make sure you get at least one game all the time - multiple lists.

Use your default list for DVD rentals. Create a 2nd list for games only. You can then select how many discs you want allocated to each list.

If you want to make sure about getting a really new release then create a third list called "New releases" and allocate one of your rentals to that list. This way you can keep getting titles sent out from your other lists and wait for the new release to become available (probably won't take more than a day). Hey presto!

I think the mistake some people fall into is only running one list. Then, they send all 3 discs back at once. If one or two of their high priority titles aren't available, 3 discs will immediately be sent out with a lower priority.

Phew, glad I got that off my chest. Learn to work the system and lovefilm can be brilliant value for money. :)
