I was looking at buying adobe elements but its a bit pricey so does anyone know of any good free ones.

Takes a bit of getting used to but I don't know of any that is anywhere near as good.

Its the best open source editor IMO, But as you say it does take a bit of getting used to.

If you still want Adobe Elements the Strato offer is still open (ends 31st of July).

You can get get it for just over a fiver, just remember to cancel the hosting package after you get the 'free' software.

What about googles one? Google picassa, that seemed ok for a basic one.

Definitely the GIMP, it's no more difficult than the likes of Photoshop to a newcomer to both programs, it just takes some getting used to if you're familiar with other packages already.
