  Ive tried charging with the usb cable and with the charger you plug into the socket an neither have got it working but i know the plug charger works as i use it for me ipad

  ok so maybe just a battery change, I have changed my 5th gen classic hard drive without too much hassle so maybe you can do it yourself, plenty of youtube tutorials.

  are you shure its a USB version? maybe it's a firewire version?? it'll only charge from the correct power supply....
  if you got it cheep in/from the States could be firewire.
  
  BTW only SOME 1st gen are being recalled; they haven't found my serial number as of friday!!

  Whats the white wire you get with the ipod its that ive been using to try an charge it.
  An its definatly fom the uk i think i got it from argos or hmv.
