Punto... i had one... it was a tank! Had 2 pretty bad accidents in it, survived both... most expensive bit was getting a tow truck to get me out of the ditch/field!

The other one was car park ice skating and i broke a wheel / suspension - cost me bout £150 for the total fix!

Peugeot or the Mini - cheapest for parts if you ever need any

Suzuki's are also pretty easy to work on if you ever need to relpace anything.
#3
Any particular models though

dont really want a punto as my sister has that and frankly i hate it

I'd go for the cheapest car you can find. At least if you wreck an old banger, you wont be much out of pocket. Not a great status symbol I know, but, sorry to say this, new drivers are probably the likliest to have and cause accidents. I thought I knew everything when I got my first car, until I did not see the bollards blocking a road!

Citroen C 2 my daughter has one with the 1.1 engine and as it has just had a face lift should be quite good value on the second hand market, generally a good car with no major problems since she has had it ( 3 years)
#6
Corsa, Fiesta or.... Kia Pride (if you want to go retro )

Mini's are great starter cars, but if your dad thinks you are going to dent it you'd probably be better off with an old fiesta, cheap parts and easy to get hold of.

He says he will only pay for it if he likes it which is peeing me off as all i ever wanted was a black austin mini but he says im too tall for it im only 5"10

Do not get a peugeot. Unreliable cars, don't have the best reputation.
Suzuki should be alright.
Protons and Daihatsu have good reputations for build quality and reliability, but not the best looks wise.
Mitsubishi and Toyota definitely reliable cars.

Don't get a corsa.

What about
vw polo
Toyota corolla

This site is quite useful, you can select the group and then find what cars are available in that group.
useful if you run a few online insurance quotes and find which group you'll be limited to

It is, but ABS would of saved one of my accidents - i sold a car just because it didnt have this after i had a near miss!

I used to have a Mini 30 in black with full black leather interior...was reallllly nice, but just too dangerous. My mate from uni used to open the door to it with his locker key...

Get a Fiat 126 the same spec as this one http://youtube.com/watch?v=O1Dwe46QWLk

Look into how easy they are to source parts, suzuki daihatsu etc may be cheap but you can wait weeks for dealers to get hold of parts for you, and there are not that many in scrap yards to salvage parts from them, if you stick to the ford, peugeots etc there are loads of dealers around and the parts arrive fairly quickly, failing that there are loads of them in scrap yards everywhere you can salvage parts from.

I'm 6'4'' and 20 stone  I usually take out my girlfriend's Daewoo Matiz instead of my accord. I love it! Great we car and it is massive inside! A wee mini tardis. Goes about 100 miles on £10 and her insurance is less than £10 a month! I thoroughly recommend it

I'm 6' tall and almost as wiiiiiiiiiiide, and I fitted in my Mini no problems.

In my opinion, Mini's have bags of character, but being over 40 years old ( as a design ) they are a real liability, all sorts of things go wrong with them, first sign of rain and they don't start, the brakes seize and they rust while u wait, and seeing as they are becomming collectable you'll get less and less for your money when you try to buy one.

You will be safer and more comfortable in something a bit more modern, and like one of the previous posters I'd say a Metro/Rover 100 would be a good bet, it will have everything you need and will be reliable and a decent one will cost peanuts.

AND!!!!!, your dad's right, you will need sommat you won't mind denting, because you will believe me, and best to dent sommat you don't really care about.

If you've got more dosh to spend then my next choice would be a Saxo, even more modern and pretty fun too.

Good luck

Definitely best advice. I do my own car maintenance. First thing I do before buying any car is check for availablity of spares and availability of a Haynes repair manual. Places like Eurocarparts and GSF Car parts stock loads of brand new spares at much, much less than a main dealer. I have had many VW and Peugeots, they are dirt cheap for spares and dead easy to work on. Ford also would be a good safe bet.

Corsa's are good! I've had mine for 5 years now without any faults whatsoever!

Its an 02 Corsa Comfort 1.0 12v. - a good starter car :)

The thing is, you only want a car that looks the car, despite cost, practicality and safety...

Now I love the Mini as much as the next person (still on the miniscene scotland), but they are not 'first car' material these days, you need to carry a toolkit with you at all times

The fact of the matter is the mini is so light and small it would beat any car off the line ( any car under 10k)
My dad wanted me to buy the new mini cooper but although i learnt in it i dont want it as its not a mini its too fat
