Hi I am looking for a good tablet under £200. I am looking preferably for a 10 inch tablet and I realise that at this price im not going to get anything thats branded but I am willing to pay up to £250 for one as my laptop has died recently and with me having a PC i dont see the need in buying another one.
Thanks for your thoughts. I would appreciate any advice or tips on this matter. Thanks
Sean

I'd 3rd the advent vega it's a great bit of kit and is currently £199 - you'll need to custom ROM it but thats dead simple now users have written apps to do it for you & it doesn't void the warranty.

check out the modaco forums for all the info & help you might need on it.

Unless you want to spend at least an extra £150 I don't think there is anything that comes close at the moment in the 10" range of tablets.

modaco forum vegacomb

vegacomb is being developed - I've linked the thread to it above - 76 pages long last time I looked! I think they have most things working now but I've not taken the jump yet, to be honest I'm in no rush as the ROM on I'm does everything I want it to anyway.

It doesn't look like there will be an official honeycomb release for the vega so this is probably the best shot & they have made amazing progress in a very short amount of time.

Thanks worto03 i have looked into it and I must say they are making quick progress. It already seems pretty stable and the overclocking looks brilliant. I will keep you posted as I will no doubt try it out as soon as I get the tablet unless it voids my warranty? Do you know whether it will or not as I really would like to try it out. Thanks

Advent vega is good for the money, especially if you put a customized version of the operating system (rom) from the modaco website. The galaxy tab has a smaller screen than you want but often pops up every now and again with deals.

Advent have specifically said that the warranty is for the hardware only so a custom ROM would not void the warranty - they have encouraged the custom ROM scene both on the modaco forum and on twitter, a clever move since it originally shipped without market or flash and was slow and buggy out of the box (that was back in Nov last year newer out of the box ROMs are better although still nowhere near as good as even the modaco r8 ROM which I use and thats old now).

Saying that, trying to explain that to someone who works at DSG if you try to take it back would probably be difficult and only gives them an excuse to try to refuse a refund\replacement so most people have simply restored it to the ROM it shipped with before taking it back if they have wished to return it - thats an easy process.

I will probably try the Corvus5 ROM before making the step to honeycomb to give them more chance to iron out the bugs but as I said earlier I'm in no rush my current Modaco ROM supports:-

GPS
connects to adhoc wi-fi points for tethering to my old nokia E51 (although I've replaced that now with a san francisco so it doesn't matter any more as that creates a proper wi-fi hotspot)
supports USB host\slave mode so I can connect usb sticks and external drives

those are pretty much the only extra things I wanted so I'm happy already.

Actually I just remembered the next thing I wanted to try was a ROM with TUN support so I can launch a cisco vpn tunnel to my work ASA's - should save me having to carry the laptop around so much when I'm oncall. I'll have to check if the Corvus5 ROM supports that as I can't remember at the mo.
