My missus and neighbour both asked me today "What is the best value 3G Pay As You Go USB dongle?".

To be honest I have no idea, any clues?

I think they are all pretty much rip offs tbh with pretty poor download speeds.

I disagree with the post above completely but I'll get to that in a moment.

My choice was 3, the modem was 70 pounds at the time although it's a lot cheaper now. When activated you get 30 days to use your data package, 10 pounds for 1GB, 15 for 3GB and 20 pounds for 7GB. After the 30 days you can let it lapse or activate another top-up if still needed, I've been using the ten pound top-ups as I find that's a reasonable amount to cover my mobile browsing.

Coverage so far has been pretty good, I've been using it in the highlands which in the technological world is the middle of nowhere and been browsing at HSDPA speeds. Same went for Dumfries which again isn't exactly a hugely built up area. Speeds vary from around 600kb/s to 1000kb/s in HSDPA area which I find is pretty good, I can easily browse, watch Youtube videos etc.

Err.. abit of a blanket statement there.
To answer OP it depends on where you live and what you are looking for. Each network has coverage of different areas, where I live Vodafone are the best with speeds of up to 7.2mb (Realistically 5.5). In terms of price 3 arn't bad but they are slower where I live 3.4mb (Realistically 1-2mb) their price plan is (£49.99 for dongle)
£10 - 1Gb
£15 - 3GB
£25 - 7GB

I use 3 same as Johnmc17. I find it adequate for my mobile needs though its not as fast as my home broadband.

You can get the modem/dongle from play.com for £39.99 delivered plus quidco.

Only 3 and Orange do pay-as-you-go USB broadband.

On 3, it's £39.99 for the dongle on play.com, then £10 for 1GB, £15 for 3GB, or £25 for 7GB, and when you buy some GBs it lasts 30 days.

On Orange, you pay £49.99 for the dongle, then sign up to a contract at £0.00 a month. You're then billed £1 + VAT per MB you use (so £1024 + VAT for 1GB).

With absolutely nothing to back it up, if you're to going to offer your opinion for someone to base their decision on it's a lot more useful to know why you have that opinion.

Well I work in a place that sells them and have had customer feedback, but didn't feel like posting quotes.

Hmmm. I guess that depends who is using it and where!

I have been using my 3G HTC phone up until last week when I took delivery of my 3 E220 modem. I mostly use it at work, where I have an excellent signal. I connect at 3.6Mb every time I log on and browsing doesnt seem too much different to my home broadband connection - which is 16.5Mb.

Download speeds are not that brilliant granted, but most will want one for browsing and emails etc and I can only say that my experience to date has exceeded expectations.

He he... well trust me on one thing - I'm pretty fussy on speed as well! If I had to wait more than a second or so at most for a page to load, I wouldnt be too happy!

I think its probably usage in poor signal areas that is where those moans are coming from! At my hone address, the signal is poor. The mobile broadband connection is also.

I also forgot to add! The contract I got (I am not an existing 3 customer) works out at £7.50pm for a 3GB cap for 18 months - with a free modem - plus £13 back from quidco!

Same here, I was expecting to be able to carry out basic browsing and e-mail with a lot of patience but at least it would be an internet connection, I've been surprised how usable it is even in areas where I wasn't sure if I'd even get a signal.

I have a 3 dongle that I got just because its half price for existing customers so I pay £5 per month for 1GB - I was worried about how much "Downloading" that would be but I have never used more than a quarter of it but then I dont use my laptop away from home much - never had a problem getting a signal and it always connects at 3.2Mb which is a lot faster than some people get at home - must say I am very impressed with it.
I only use it for browsing the web and collecting a few mails - but even so - 20 odd hours a month only uses about 150Mb so I barely touch a gig

Did that include the USB dongle free ?

Also, is that in a 12 month or 18 month contract ?

Thanks
Daniel
