What's the best solution for wireless on the Xbox? get the official adaptor or is there a better (read cheaper) solution?

You could try a wireless gaming bridge but unless there is a significant difference in price its easiest just to get the MS adaptor...

I bought mine for £16.99 the price seems to fluctuate all the time so keep an eye out. Also, it doesnt necessarily need its own power supply., you can either plug it into two usb ports or use the supplied power adaptor

I just use the wireless on my lappy. hook the LAN cable up between laptop and xbox, bridge the connection and boom you're flyin!

Thanks for the info, just seemed a little extreme. Although I've just found out an old router, which I'm hoping I can bridge to my other router........ we'll see
