I have just tried returning a faulty item of clothing to Sports World (Preston) and was refused a refund.

I was told by a member of staff that they could only give me a credit note or exchange. I asked to speak to a manager and had the misfortune to deal with someone who has obviously never heard of customer service.
She point blank refused to offer a refund, saying it was against company policy, none of the countries 450? stores offer refunds etc, etc.

I mentioned the sale of goods act and was told that if I wanted a refund I would need to take it up with trading standards. She then turned around and tried to walk off. I asked for her name and she said I'm the store manager before turning to the poor girl on the till and saying give them my name, then she stormed off!

I couldn't believe it - obviously I will be complaining to head office and possibly trading standards but I just wanted to give you all a heads up.

Buy from here at your own risk - I know I wont be doing so again.

Same in our one at Rochford essex, no refund, just a credit note!!!!!!!!!!!
It's the same here in Milton Keynes, and all their other stores.

They normally have bright yellow and black striped Point Of Sale displays advertising the fact.

Same happened to me with a pair of football boots that didn't fit, and I wasn't aware either, until the staff pointed out the notices.
I know this is their usual policy, but surely it shouldn't apply to faulty goods? I'd definitely take it further if I were you, let us know how you get on.
I thought they (and all shops) HAD to refund if something is faulty ? Is this not so?

They only have to offer an exchange if the goods are faulty, not a refund.

If an exchange could not be agreed then they would offer a credit note.

I'm surprised anyone shops there at all then if this is there policy, fair enough to deny a refund if you've just changed your mind etc etc, but to refuse on faulty goods too is just bizarre - possibly the next administration casualty?
havent really had a problem with them but i had returned stuff from them
I absolutely hate this shop, the fact that they do not offer a refund for a certain amount of days is a joke, but to not give you a refund on faulty goods is just unreal. I think you should take this up with someone else though as as you said the sales of goods idea when it is not fit for consumer purchase! Get to trading standards or thier head office and report the evil witch who was the 'manager'
if you return an item because you no longer want it then they do not have to offer you a refund as long as they offer a credit note or exchange but if the goods are faulty then im sure by law that you are entitled to a refund!
its all to do with your statutory rights!
When my £90 boots split I took them back and got refunded cash. So it depends who you are really.

If your clothes are faulty

If an item of clothing that you have bought doesn't meet the requirements listed above:
[*] If you have only worn it a few times or haven’t had a reasonable opportunity to check it, you could be entitled to a refund for a fault or a poor description, or alternatively you may request a replacement.
[*] If the fault is only minor and can easily be put right, it is reasonable to accept a repair. This won’t stop you claiming a replacement or refund if the repair turns out to be unsatisfactory.
[*] If you have worn it more than a few times or have had a reasonable opportunity to check it, you are probably still entitled to a repair or replacement. A repair should be carried out within a reasonable period of time and without causing you significant inconvenience. Any repair should restore it to a satisfactory condition. If this does not happen, you are entitled to a replacement or compensation. This could be a sum of money or the cost of repairing the item.
[*] If the item of clothing cannot be replaced or repaired economically, you are entitled to a refund. The trader may make a reduction from the price you paid to allow for the use you have had from the clothing.
[*] If anything else has been damaged, for example if the colour ran due to a fault and discoloured other clothes, or you are out of pocket in any other way, you may be entitled to compensation over and above the price of the original item.
[*] Remember, if you are entitled to a refund, replacement, repair or compensation, it is the trader who must sort out your problem. The trader cannot tell you to go back to the manufacturer.
why was the clothing faulty?

The stitching under the arm of the top was coming apart, already had a hole in it about 3-4 cms. Never noticed until we gave it to our son, he was the one who spotted it.
