A Public Holiday is a holiday declared by the state to which all employees are entitled.

A Bank holiday is, exactly as it says, a holiday for the Banks.

Bank holidays and public holidays in the UK are, for all practical purposes, the same thing. Strictly speaking, bank holidays are those holidays when banks and businesses are closed, and public holidays are those holidays whose observation has become established through custom and practice.

There is no legal entitlement to bank holidays, it all depends on your employer and contract. A vast majority of people in the service and food/retail industries will be made to work for little or no premium.
