Trade = can go back to them if you have a problem with the car. Can take to court. Though you pay a premium on the car for this.

Private = cheap but can have hidden history but if you get an old age pensioner you can bet its a bargain in good nick too. You have no come back if something goes wrong.

As lumoruk says, you will have a warranty from a dealer and some come back if the car turns out to be faulty or shonky. if you don't know anything about cars then you need to take someone who does along with you when you view any used car. You need to do security checks if you buy privately; a dealer is resposible for the provenance of a car.
You should haggle the price down for either and try to get extra stuff.

you gotta watch with a trade seller as regards with the type of warranty they sell or give with the car, they might give a warranty that they can "wash thier hands" of any repairs/warranty work from the orginal trader.
In other words you have a warranty that needs to go to a garage that can take on warranty repairs & the warranty company dosnt always pay the full labour rate, so then you have to make up the difference. we deal/dealt with warranty companies over many years & some are a right pain to get authorisation, espicially if you've not stuck to the service schedule & it has to be a vat registered garage that takes on the warranty work.

to be honest some warranties are not worth the paper they are written on !!!!

So basically you're an assistant to a student.

At least we've got that sorted.

He's asking about buying a car from a trader, as opposed to selling a car I think.

always go for private myself. generally save a fortune compared to trade just make sure either you know what your looking for in a car (mechanical / fault wise) or you take someone with you who does.
