bg1: why do we pay through the nose for Gas/water/electricity ?

black gerbil1 Avatar

I think its fair to say that water, gas, electricity and shelter are our basic needs right? (along with food).

so why are we paying x3 the actual cost of a house when we get out a mortgage, how have we ended up like this, so few making many millions out of the rest of us surely this is not right?

Also why are we being charged so much for water/gas? I think its a fair statement to say that The water in this country is mine just as it is yours. How can one say they own it? its nature. All we should pay is what it costs the company to produce, such as employee fees, maintenance, cleaning, etc etc etc. They should not make a penny profit, because its our basic need.

sad world we live in :(

The companies would make very little money, or probably even lose money, if it were state owned, but the governments over the years have privatised them, so therefore, we must pay for the extraction, supply etc of everything that we need.
#4
London tap water has actually been 'owned' by eleven previous people.

That's what makes it so tasty!

Unlike the stuff that just falls out of the sky up here in GOC.

the whole point is that they make no money, they breakeven or make a slight profit, not the billions tey do each year.

After all you was born in this country just like the, how can they say they own the water and charge you for a profit? we should only pay what it takes for them to get it to our houses, and no profit!

i agree! the one that gets to me is council tax! i pay £150 a month and they do sod all for me, empty my bins once a week, never see ploice officers etc walking the street, paying for all the fat cats siting behind her desks-so wrong!

water is high-because i live in the south west our bills are the highest in the country-not sure why

plus banks are so tight actaully giving people morgages-my brother in law went to his bank with his partner for one-with a £19k deposit wasnt able to get one because the house prices are so high.... how are people expected to buy a place!

i love the "counsil tax" if you put your bin out on the wrong day they fine you!! so much for a free country for when you get fined to taking your bin out.

its insane how we pay so much for the basics, which we should not be paying so much for. We are the only animal on this planet that pay to live here. people are to scared to ask these questions

Indeed, as Colin says, just install some solar panels or wind turbines and free electricity after a while as the national grid sometimes buy excess off you. I don't know the exact details, but on your millions bg1, I'm sure you could get a minion to look into it for you.

I too am from the South West and we face considerably higher prices particularly for sewerage, due to the massive investment that was required after privatisation in 1989.

In addition, a relatively small number of people live in the South West and they are spread across a very wide area. Therefore the bills are higher...

Why would any company do that?

if i was in control i would, why would I want human beings to pay so much money for the basics, i find it digsuting that they make this much profit, and people are stuggle to stay alot. I would do it because I love the human race, I would do it because were all one being.

you already already in teh wrong mindset of "why would they do it". They got you thinking of money and greed, instead of love and peace.

Trouble is, someone has to fund the hunt for the oil, investigate the best means to release it, pump it safely out of the ground, refine it and then get the petrol to us no more than about 300 yards from our homes. It all costs money.

i said we pay what it takes to pull it out the earth, manufacture it, filter etc etc, we pay the employees, but what we dont do it pay such as excess that these companies make BILLIONS each year. employees all get a fair wage. but we do no pay an extra.

we should pay all pay how much it costs to get to our house, and say 1% on top of that so the company can make a profit, no more then that. Its maddness that we pay this month for the basics, its scary. What kind of world do we live in? people are struggling to stay afloat on the basics, and were getting charged soo much for stuff like this

what is happening to the human race?

The weakest die, same in any species on this planet sadly. The slowest gazelle will get eaten just as much as the person who has no clean water will die.

and again, why would any company do it for no profit. Forget about what you think should be done, just explain why a company (which is solely there to make profit) would be happy to make no profit.
You didn't answer why you aren't setting a company up to do it free. You are only reselling power from the national grid, its not like you have to do any real work.

colin my point is we are being shafted via the buttocks for the basics, and we so far behind yet we think were at the cutting edge of everything, just wanting to open peoples eyes.

you seem to be embedded in the system too much tho :(

There is a non profit electricty and gas company

https://www.ebico.org.uk/

Unfortunately they were more expensive than I am already paying!

So the reason why people are happy to make companies profit is that they tend to offer better prices.

In France elec/gas prices the annual increase is capped at a certain rate, can't remember what the rate is but it was certainly less than 10%. An article in the Daily telegraph suggested that as our power companies are French owned that we were subsidising the costs of this.
EDF denied this but then they would...
http://www.ukpower.co.uk/gas_electricity_news/6039-uk-energy-consumers-not-subsidising-french-counterparts

Plus we are subsidising the costs of all these wind farms.

If the governments never sold half the public sectors then we would be in a better state.
#36
Also in this country we have precious little storage capacity for gas, I think it is like 18 days or so. Hence when winter comes we have to pay the going rate which is higher than during the summer, yes I know there are long term contracts but there are also short term ones.
In German and other countries they have far more storage capacity (I think 120 days or so in Germany case) so can purchase gas during the summer when it is cheaper.
#37
i understand we will be paying money, what im trying to say is that the companines dont make a profit. in winter yeah we will pay more for reaons, which i understand, but my underling point is we do not pay anything more then is necessary

as i said, ebico are non profit making, but charge more than profit making companies, so going to them means you pay more.
