Looking to buy one for occasional use, mainly short trips. We have a Renault Scenic Grand, so large lift up lid.

Seem to be wide range of prices, can get one for £35 Argos, or spend over £120 in Tesco for the same thing. Could anyone who has used them enlighten me please.

Hi
I went to tescos last week and bought the 3cycle carrier. it was reduced from 29.99 to 14.97, an absolute bargain. This was in store only and still showed at 29.99 on website. It was made by autocare and was very easy to fit. hope this helps.

it looked like this one on fleabay Item number: 220419065178

i have that one from argos, bought it after searching the net for advice for days on end. most carriers are tow bar mounted and its not recommended to use this type, but needs must if you don't have a towbar. there's a phone number in the argos catalogue and on on their site so you can check it will fit your car. IIRC it will need to use the "dumbell" ends for the cables. it fits in about 3 minutes after you've practised a few times. i've used it to carry 2 bikes with no problems but i also use bungee cords in addition to the straps supplied but i've always been overcautious lol

How many bikes do you need to carry and do you have a tow bar?

If you get one of those hanging types you will need a number plate/light board if your rear lights are obscured....
If you have a towbar fitted how about one of these fitted to the towbar.

Halfords are doing some of the ones that fit on to roof bars for £20 each but you can get them for £15 each at Rutland Cycles (online). These work out more expensive that the ones you hang on the back but if your lights are obscured its probably going to be cheaper than getting wiring for a lighting board fitted

As you can probably tell I've been looking at bike racks recently !!

Don't know how to help, a rear loaded bike carrier with 3 bikes on it is risky but short distance will be fine got a 2 bike carrier from halfords for about £35 (was 5yrs ago).

I took one BMX all round europe on a rear mounted, I've now got roof bars and a top loading cycle carrier that is so much more secure and allows me easy access to the boot. Roof bars were £40 off ebay and £30 for the Mont Blanc Scot cycle carrier with 3yr warranty

Had not considered the ones that go on the roof, not sure would be feasible for short trips...and I could NEVER manage to get a full adult bike onto the roof

It's quicker but if you're a woman you won't get an adult bike on the roof

just be prepared to scratch your paint work loads with a 3 rear cycle carrier or gets lots of padding, don't forget you will need the rear board which cost around £40 and you'll also need the connectors for it and everything = lots of money

We have them at the moment and it is a bit awkward to lift adult bikes on but manageable. The worst bit is holding the bike steady whilst also trying to attach the securing arm.....

I'll be getting a tow bar one as we now need to fit 4 bikes on and there isn't really enough room for 4 on the roof....

If you do decide to fit a tow bar or need wiring for a lighting board you can get a wiring kit which plugs into your existing connectors at the rear

Thanks lumoruk but we also need to squeeze on a roof box!!

Well guessing as short trips and only 2-3 bikes it's for days out riding. Why don't you put them in the car. Big plastic sheet (pound shop) fold seats down job done. I can fit 2 road bikes in a C1 so fitting them in a Grand Scenic should be a piece of cake.

Was just an example of the space, not me or mine. I reckon the effort/pain would have been well worth a run round the nurburgring

Yes and you can tell it's blokes. 2 bikes in and only room for one bag, yes that will be fine! Bet they had a top weekend.

Yes very much all woman.

Really good advice and the bits not thought of...registration plate etc. But still don't see why they cost over £100, then still have to get reg plate anyway.

We have been loading them into the boot space but very fiddly and potential to damage my new bike! Thought a bike carrier would be easier

Just rang Renault, quoted me £190. Said have to get type that go on tow bar only because no metal support for any other type. :w00t:

How much does it cost to have a tow bar fitted

You could get a quote from these people

Or if you or OH are handy with spanners try fitting it yourself - there are instructions on the site below
