Never buy a helmet second hand - they could be damaged though you can't see

Not worth the risk

Edit - some cheap ones here http://lidsdirect.co.uk/epages/eshop193014.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/eshop193014/Categories/Syko_Orbit

+1 on this. Buy the best new helmet you can afford.
Lidl were doing cheap biking clothes last week. Might be worth checking a local store if you have one nearby as they might still have some in stock.

Probably worth popping into your local bike shop and have a look round, talk to people about the kit as buying s/hand stuff is fine as long as you are getting good quality used and not poor quality. Not always easy to tell if you do not know what to look for.
Also depends on the type of biking you want to do, if its touring you will need different kit than if you are just gonna ride on a sunday in the dry weather...
Get it right and you will not end up buying the kit over again trying to get it right..

If you are 38, 40 or 42" chest there are some jackets on sale for £25
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/367086/defender-motorbike-jacket-25-plus-5/

Also check Aldi and Lidl - they were doing some bike gear a week or so ago - they might have some left.

Stay away from the Aldi & Lidl gear, it really is ***** !

If you can't afford the correct gear, imo, you shouldn't be given a license. In the event of an accident, there is only that between you & the road - so buy decent stuff !!
