Hi - Im purchasing some birkenstock sandles for my hols. I was planning on purchasing the Brown vesrions of the ramses however I've just also seen that they do a black version. Obviously I want to look as cool as possible in my sandles so was hoping that you guys could make the final decision for me.... So what is it to be Black or Brown... You decide.........

Anyone own a pair of these already. A few sites recommend that you should go down a shoe size as they tend to be on the large size. Must have something to do with Germans having big feet. I usually take a size 10 but I'm thinking of maybe dropping to a 9. Dont think they do half sizes.

That crossed my mind a bit too. Any suggestions on alternative casual footwear? Its gonna be warm so I dont want a shoe or trainer. Cheers

I think you will find not, I know lots of gay men my brother for one and all his mates have exceptional taste in clothing and would not be seen dead in birkenstocks, come to think of it I have NEVER seen anyone wearing birkenstocks anywhere down canal street, ever.

well my two mates who are gay wear them i told them they looked gay in them but they said they were comfy and didnt care, they said there were better than my primark flip flops!!!!

This thread is a windup clearly...................

That one sentence alone says so:)

Not a wind up Tinks they're actually a nice sandle. What would you suggest I wear. I appreciate that not everyone has the same taste but I think they look quite good and I believe they are extremley comfortable.

See I have loads of friends on the "scene" that I know through my brother, never seen sandals yet, they would not be seen dead in selfridges buying their gucci man bags in sandals

It's personal taste isn't it, they are comfortable and sensible I am sure, but I just can't see past the sandle and sock image, anyway brown, I prefer brown shoes:)

Thanks Tinks. I'm actually dropping the socks and sporting some healthy Toe Beards instead.

Just reading this thread. My husband wears a pair of birkenstocks as does a married chap at work. I've seen men wearing them out with women and kids - never thought of them as remotely gay. Is it a N/S divide thing (not sure where anyone is) or age?
Personally I like Birkenstocks on men and women and they are very comfy!

Im from the North West. I'd suggest it was more of a class divide than a cultural divide. Thanks for giving me the assurance that its ok to wear Birkenstocks if your a straight guy.

Thanks mate. I quite like these too and may purchase. I like the fact that they're not endorsed by a major sporting label.

no worries,I assuming you are from Sheffield, they can easily be picked up from several stores in Meadowhall (Schuh/House of Fraser)

best to try on as the sizes are sometimes a bit odd

if you are from Sheffield wearing Birkenstocks in public would not be wise.....

Birkenstocks are not 'gay'. I've never seen a gay man wearing them (to my knowledge).

Not to perpetuate a stereotype, but gay men do tend to have more style and therefore Birkenstocks would be rare.

Boothy has actually linked to some nice footwear:w00t:

I'd have thought gay men wearing sandals would have been rare too? Perhaps elder, gay, german men?

Who knows... wear flip flops if you must wear anything...
